LAURINBURG, NC—Eight different Knights scored including seniors Bryan Riddell (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) and Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) to lead host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 23-6 conquest of Deep South Conference rival Pfeiffer University during Tuesday’s ‘Senior Day’.
The Knights, who retain the ‘Laurinheimer Cup’ for the fourth consecutive year, improved to 7-6 overall and 7-2 in the DSC. The Falcons fell to 3-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Second year head coach Michael Lawson honored Riddell (who finished with two goals and an assist) and Fitzgerald (who finished with one goal and one assist) before the game as the only St. Andrews seniors.
SAPC was led by junior Dalen Crouse’s (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) seven goals and five assists. Junior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) followed just behind with five goals and five helpers.
Crouse scored the first goal of the game before Pfeiffer responded with the next two to take its only lead of the contest, 2-1, midway through the first. Freshman Tyler Merriman (Clemmons, NC) scored his first collegiate goal to start the Falcon scoring on the extra-man opportunity. Sophomore Eddie Gourley (Damascus, MD) followed with the go-ahead goal a minute later.
Riddell and Crouse finished the scoring in the first to catapult St. Andrews back into the lead, 3-2, for good. The Knights, who out scored Pfeiffer 12-1 in the second frame to take command of the game, opened up the second with six goals in the first three minutes.
After coming out of the intermission with a 15-2 lead, St. Andrews posted six more in the third and two more in the fourth to pull away to the 17-goal victory.
The Falcons, who went 3-for-5 on the EMO, scored their final two goals while being a man-up. Gourley finished with three goals and freshman Kevin Anderson (Altamonte Springs, FL) added three assists and won 12 face offs. Sophomore Ryan Chandler (Woodbridge, VA) scored once and senior Robert Hokanson (Monrovia, MD) tallied his first of the season.
Junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC), who recorded a hat trick and added an assist, was credited with the game-winning goal. Junior Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) finished with two goals and three assist while junior Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) notched two goals.
Freshman Robby Caldwell (Cary, NC) scored his first collegiate goal for SAPC while junior Sean Todd ( Union Bridge, MD) and freshman Kyle Loda (Vienna, VA) each had an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) made five saves for his sixth win of the season while backup netminder Steve Hartley (Hilliard, OH) had three stops in relief.
Freshman Ethan Young (Hilliard, OH) had game highs of 15 face offs won and 11 ground balls.
Sophomore Chip Baucom (Chattanooga, TN) made a game-high 16 saves in the first three quarters while taking the loss. Freshman Jake Milrod (Leesburg, VA) had two saves in his first minutes of the year between the pipes.
St. Andrews will wait for this weekends DSC results to find out who their first round opponent will be for Tuesday’s Quarterfinals of the Deep South Tournament. Pfeiffer visits DSC foe Limestone on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
