Box Score

Laurinburg N.C. – The Knights Lacrosse (5-7, 0-3) team faced off against a gritty Conference Carolinas rival Belmont Abbey Crusaders (4-5, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon. Though it was a hard fought game by both teams the Crusaders managed to edge out the Knights late by a score of 13-12.

The first period Belmont Abbey controlled the tempo and held St. Andrews to only one goal while notching three of their own. During the second, the Knights found their rhythm and took over, netting five goals; which four of the five goals were by Sophomore Daniel Shields (Mercer Island, WA), in the period making the score 6-5 in favor of St. Andrews going into halftime.

The second half proved to be a slugfest as both teams delivered blows without either team wavering. The third quarter was like an offensive chess match with each team going back and forth scoring goals throughout the period with Belmont Abbey eventually winning the quarter 5-4 bringing the game to a 10-10 tie going into the decisive fourth. Both teams laced up their cleats tight and came to compete in the fourth, but Belmont Abbey’s solid defense and potent offense proved to be too much in the end as they edged out the Knights 13-12.

Leading the way for St. Andrews was Sophomore Daniel Shields (Mercer Island, WA) who scored an amazing six goals and assisted one shot. Also scoring for the Knights, were Ryan Konig (Ellicott City, MD) and Chris Michela (Oak Hill, VA) who netted two goals each; while Alex Tindall (Edmonds, WA) and Nick Hund (Snohomish, WA) added a goal each. St. Andrews takes the field again on Tuesday when they welcome Wingate University, game starting at 4 p.m.
