Laurinburg N.C. - The Knights took to the field Tuesday to try to continue their winning ways against Wheeling Jesuit University which proved to be a difficult task. Wheeling Jesuit came out with a relentless offensive attack in the first two quarters scoring two goals each quarter. The Knights work defensively as Wheeling Jesuit attempted twenty three shots in the first half while the Knights took just 8 themselves. At the end of the first half of play the Knights found themselves down but not out behind Wheeling Jesuit four to zero.
But knowing there was still a lot lacrosse left to be played, St. Andrews came out with a completely different attitude in the third and became the aggressors. The Knights went on to score five goals in the third while only giving up three to cut the deficit to a close seven to five. As the fourth quarter ensued the Knights kept on the heat by playing very sound fundamental lacrosse. As the intensity of the game picked up and the seconds were ticking off the clock St. Andrews continued to find ways to claw back scoring two goals in the final two minutes including a go ahead goal from Senior Steve Tramonte, (Coral Springs, FL) to put the Knights on top 8-7 with just a minute remaining in the game. It seemed the game was all but over then with one second left after missing a shot on goal; Wheeling Jesuit picked up a groundball and fired a shot thru the net as time expired forcing overtime with a score of 8-8.
The Knights came out focused and determined in overtime to leave everything on the field. Stephen Murphy (Ossining, NY) won the faceoff for the Knights to start overtime. With a crowd and team behind him Freshman Alex Tindall, (Edmonds, WA) seemed to have ice in his veins when he fired a well placed shot past the Wheeling Jesuit goalie to secure the win for the Knights. After the game Assistant Coach Chris Sherman went on to say that the halftime talk was crucial, he stated “it took some time for the guys to settle down and realize that this team wasn’t any more talented than anyone we’ve faced and the could be beaten” he then went on to say “we just had to stick to the fundamentals, go after ground balls, run faster, and shoot harder”. Indeed they Knights did all of those things in the second half which led to Freshmen Cameron Walsh, (Farmingville, NY) and Alex Tindall, (Edmonds, WA) to both have three goals, while another Freshman Nick Hund, (Snohomish, WA) chipped in two goals himself, and Senior Steve Tramonte, (Coral Springs, FL) added a goal and assist. On the defensive side of the ball Sophomore Kyle Davitt, (Shoreview, MN) came up huge with a whopping 19 saves to secure the victory. The Knights take the field again at home on Thursday against Dominican College at 3:30 p.m.
