Laurinburg N.C. – The St. Andrews (0-1 overall) men’s lacrosse team opened the 2011 season Saturday battling on Knights field against Catawba College (1-0 overall). The Knights and Indians entered the game each in pursuit of their first season victory, at the end of the day the Indians triumphed 10-5.
The Indians racked up ten goals off seven different players. Catawba cast 31 shots prompting Knight Kyle Davitt (Shoreview, MN) to deflect 14 shots. Braden Artem collected the game high four goals for the Indians, while teammates John Scheich and Freddie Turcio each assisted one and netted one. Tom Cullop and Alex Hodges each added a goal to the Indians total. Marty Tuohy collected two goals and one assist. Starting goalie Michael Pecchia saw 21 shots from the Knights and deflected five shots. The Indians exceeded the Knights in ground balls picking-up 37-31.
The Knights struggled to win the face offs, finding the advantage off four. Midfielder Chris Michela (Oak Hill, VA) completed two goals, as teammate Nick Hund (Snohomish, WA) scored one. Michael Thomas (Churchill, MD) shot twice picking up as many goals. Stephen Murphy (Ossining, NY) was the only Knight to accrue an assist. In the fourth, Catawba amassed four penalties as the Knights remained composed attempting to regain the lead.
St. Andrews will look for the first season win when they take the field against Mars Hill at 3:30 pm on Knights Field.
