CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse team scored the final three goals of the game but host Queens University of Charlotte held on for a 12-10 Conference Carolinas victory on Saturday afternoon at the Charlotte Sports Complete at Marion Diehl Park.
The Knights finish the regular season with a 3-12 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the league. St. Andrews enters the 2008 Conference Carolinas Men’s Lacrosse Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 seed Lees-McRae College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter but St. Andrews opened up the second stanza with five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. Five different Knights scored in the rally. The Royals scored the final three goals of the second quarter including their last one with four seconds left in the half to deadlock the contest, 5-5, at halftime.
Queens took the lead for good with the first three goals out of the intermission as the Royals finish off a 6-0 run. SAPC pulled to within one, 8-7, with the final two goals of the third.
The Royals were finally able to put away the Knights with four goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 12-7. St. Andrews kept fighting with late goals by senior Alex Kalvin (Marietta, Ga.), freshman Dustin Lisica (Glen Burnie, Md.), and freshman Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.). However, Queens kept St. Andrews off the scoreboard in the final 3 1/2 minutes to hang onto the two-goal victory.
The Royals held a 43-37 shot advantage, had6-37edge on ground balls, and won 15-of-23 face offs. Stephan Leblanc and Nick Mezzanotte each had a hat trick and one assist to pace the hosts.
Junior Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) led the Knights offensively with three points including two goals and one assist. Kalvin tied Howell for team-high goal honors with two scores.
Lisica netted his first collegiate goal while Michela provided one goal and one assist. Junior Zachary Miller (Middletown, Del.), junior Phil Hardy (Cincinnati, Ohio), freshman Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.), and freshman Ryan Hoover (Arnold, Md.) had the Knights other goals. Junior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.), sophomore Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.), and Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.) all dished out one assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.) made 11 saves for SAPC.
