BELMONT, N.C.—Junior Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) won 22 face offs and grabbed 17 ground balls for visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College but Belmont Abbey College won Wednesday’s Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse game 18-8.
Michael Brown and Aaron Flood both had five goals and one assist as the Crusaders improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Freshman Ryan Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md.) led the Knights -- who maintain a 3-11 overall and 2-2 league ledgers -- with two goals.
The Abbey took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and maintained a three-goal advantage, 9-6, at halftime with both teams scoring five times in the second frame. BAC pulled away with a 4-0 third quarter and a 5-2 fourth to win by 10 goals.
SAPC out shot the Crusaders 42-40 but Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Mark Kelske made 21 saves. St. Andrews also held a slim 44-42 advantage on ground balls.
The Knights also dominated the face offs with Young winning 22-of-29 face offs. Young also led SAPC with a season-high 17 ground balls.
Six different Knights scored one goal including junior Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada), junior Zachary Miller (Middletown, Del.), freshman Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.), junior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.), sophomore Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.), and freshman Matt Wagner (Crownsville, Md.).
Knights’ junior goalie Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) had 11 saves on the afternoon.
St. Andrews visiting Conference Carolinas rival Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
