LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Ryan Hoover (Arnold, Md.) scored a natural hat trick in the first quarter as host St. Andrews Presbyterian College jumped out to a four-goal lead to start the game and coasted to a 12-3 non-conference men’s lacrosse victory over Rollins College on a cold and wet Sunday afternoon at Knights Field.

Eight different Knights scored as SAPC improved to 3-9 overall by winning their third straight home contest. The Tars fall to 2-10.

Hoover scored the first goal of the game and after a freshman Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.) goal, found the back of the net two more times in the opening quarter.

Freshman goalkeeper Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.), in his first collegiate start, kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the first 15 minutes by making three saves as the Knights held a 4-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Rollins finally squeaked a shot past Wade late in the second quarter but a pair of junior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) netted a pair of goals in the final 90 seconds of the half to give St. Andrews a 6-1 advantage at the intermission. Wade and the Knights defense held the Tars scoreless for the first 27 minutes of the game.

St. Andrews’ out scored Rollins, 3-1, in both the third and fourth quarters to extend their final margin of victory to nine-goals.

Wade finished with 14 saves in his first collegiate victory.

SAPC dominated the statistical categories with a 53-26 shot advantage and a 60-37 ground ball edge. The Tars were given 11 extra-man opportunities but the Knights ‘D’ was up to the task killing 10 of them. Junior Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) was phenomenal in the face off cycle for St. Andrews winning 17-of-19 face offs including scooping up 14 ground balls.

Hoover’s hat trick was his second multi-goal game in as many days. Loda and freshman Ryan Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md.) each netted a pair of goals. Junior Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) added one goal and a game-high three assists. Freshman Matt Wagner (Crownsville, Md.) chipped in with one goal and one assist. The Knights other goal scorers were Michela, junior John Holt (Montclair, Va.), and freshman Charles Lewis (Greensboro, N.C.). Junior TJ Dacey (Round Hill, Va.) and sophomore Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.) supplied one assist apiece.

Junior Drew Bernstein (Garden City, N.Y.) was the only Tars player with two points scoring one goal and dishing out one helper. Sophomores Charlie Shelly (Parkland, Fla.) and Christopher Gorman (Casselberry, Fla.) scored Rollins other goals. Freshman starting goalie Zach Cole (Rumford, R.I.) made 10 saves on the day.

St. Andrews hosts nationally ranked Limestone College in Conference Carolinas action with the opening face off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. SAPC will be celebrating ‘Senior Day’ that afternoon.
