SAPC lacrosse drops two games up north

WHEELING, W.Va.—Junior attack Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) led the St. Andrews offense with eight goals in a pair of men’s lacrosse games in three days but the Knights (0-4) lost both games by three goals. Seton Hill University held off SAPC 11-8 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on Sunday before Wheeling Jesuit University edged the Knights 13-10 on Tuesday in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Howell had eight of St. Andrews 18 goals in the two non-conference contests while freshman Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.) netted four total goals.

St. Andrews next faces No. 7 nationally ranked Bryant University on Saturday at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

SUNDAY:Seton Hill 11, St. Andrews 8

The Knights out scored Seton Hill 3-2 in both the third and fourth quarters but it was not enough to erase a 7-2 halftime deficit.

The Griffins surged ahead with a 5-1 second quarter while the Seton Hill goalkeeper preserved the lead by making 17 saves on 28 shots by St. Andrews.

SHU held a slim 30-28 shot advantage and 34-28 ground ball edge but SAPC dominated the face offs winning 19-of-21. Junior Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) won all 19 face offs for the Knights.

Howell scored six of the Knights eight goals while Lewnes tallied the other two goals for the visitors. Freshman Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.) had a team-high two assists. Three other Knights dished out one assist including junior Pat Milchling (Fallston, Md.), sophomore Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.), and freshmen Matt Wagner (Crownsville, Md.).

Junior goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) made nine saves.

TUESDAY: Wheeling Jesuit 13, St. Andrews 10

Wheeling Jesuit scored the first three goals of the game and led from wire-to-wire.

St. Andrews closed a 5-2 gap after the first 15 minutes to just one goal (7-6) with a 4-2 second quarter. However, the Cardinals out scored the Knights 6-4 after halftime to prevail by three.

SAPC took 45 shots by the Wheeling Jesuit netminder made 15 saves to keep the hosts ahead. Hull had 11 stops for the Knights on 39 Cardinal shots.

The Knights once again dominated the face offs winning 13-of-18.

Howell had a team-high three points with two goals and an assist while Lewnes tallied two goals. A quartet of Knights had one goal and one assist including juniors Zachary Miller (Middletown, Del.) and Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.), and freshmen Ryan Hoover (Arnold, Md.) and Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.).

Junior Phil Hardy (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored his first goal of the season and freshman Charles Lewis (Greensboro, N.C.) registered his first collegiate goal. Junior Marcus Kirby (Greensboro, N.C.) and freshman John Derwent (Glenelg, Md.) each chipped in with their first helpers of the season.
