SALISBURY, N.C.—Freshman Ryan Hausworth (Crownsville, Md.) had two goals and two assists in St. Andrews Presbyterian College season-opener but host Catawba College scored the final four goals of the game to rally to 11-9 NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse victory on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium.

Kurt Green, who finished with four goals, scored the tying and go-ahead goals to lead the Indians (1-1 overall) to the victory. Juniors Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and Zachary Miller (Middletown, Del.) also had two goals for the Knights (0-1).

Freshman Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.) started the scoring with his first collegiate goal just three minutes and five seconds into the game giving St. Andrews a quick 1-0 lead. Classmate Ryan McNeeley (Gambrills, Md.) assisted on Lewnes goal.

Catawba finished off the first period with the final five goals to take a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes including a pair of goals by Green and Wayne Carbiener.

St. Andrews cut the deficit to 5-4 at halftime with all three goals of the second quarter. Miller scored both of his goals in 83 seconds on passes from Lewnes and Hausworth. Howell pulled the Knights to within one at halftime on another assist by Hausworth.

Hausworth tied the game up at 5-5 midway through the third quarter with his first collegiate goal. Freshman Steven Tramonte (Coral Springs, Fla.) assisted on Hausworth’s first goal. The Indians regained a one-goal lead twice in the third stanza but the Knights were able to answer each time. Hausworth answered the call the first time just 20 seconds after the Catawba goal while Howell answered the Indians second go-ahead goal in 53 seconds.

St. Andrews looked poised to win its season-opener by taking a two-goal lead in the fourth quarter on goals by freshmen Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.) and Matt Wagner (Crownsville, Md.). Both Michela’s and Wagner’s goals were their first college goals. Lewnes, who finished the game with one goal and two helpers, assisted on Michela’s goal.

After Catawba pulled to within one on a goal just 22 seconds after Wagner’s goal, Green propelled the Indians into the lead with a pair of goals just 14 seconds apart. The Knights attempts to tie the game up for the final five-plus minutes failed and Catawba added an insurance goal with one second left in regulation to seal the victory.

Catawba won 12-of-23 face offs; took 20 more shots (52-332); and held a slim 38-37 ground ball advantage. Junior goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) kept St. Andrews in the game with a game-high 19 saves. Hull’s (0-1) 19 saves on Saturday was his second most saves in a single game in his three years at SAPC.

St. Andrews next host No. 2 nationally ranked Mercyhurst College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the team’s home-opener.
