Limestone defeats St. Andrews in CVAC men's lacrosse finals

LAURINBURG, N.C.—No. 1 seed Limestone College broke a 6-6 halftime tie with a 6-0 third period en route to winning the 2007 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship Game against host and No. 2 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 16-9, on Sunday afternoon.

The No. 8 nationally ranked Saints (13-1 Overall), who have won nine straight conference tournament titles, wins the inaugural CVAC crown behind a seven goal performance from junior attack Justin Haworth (Deer Park, N.Y.).

The No. 10 nationally ranked Knights (11-5 Overall) held a slim lead for most of the first half but Limestone scored the final two goals of the half to deadlocked the championship game, 6-6, at the intermission. Sophomore Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) broke a 3-3 tie late in the first to give St. Andrews a 4-3 lead after the first stanza. Senior Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) added an extra-man opportunity (EMO) goal in the first minute of the second quarter and a senior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.) tally midway through the period gave SAPC its second and third two-goal leads of the day.

Hawarth tied the game at six apiece with a pair of goals in a 27 second span before the midway break. The Saints continued with the momentum out of the interlude with 6-0 third period to take command of the game. The Knights were held to six shots in the third (zero on net) while Limestone scored six times on 13 attempts.

St. Andrews ended a 24-minute scoreless drought with a sophomore Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) goal in the second minute of the fourth but the Saints out scored the Knights, 4-2, in the final 13 minutes to the conference title by seven-goals.

Hawarth scored his seven goals including one EMO tally and one short-handed score on 15 shots. Three other Saints scored a pair of goals including senior Ryan Collins (Black River, N.Y.), junior Allen Vaughn (Skaneatdes, N.Y.), and junior Greg Kacinko (Alpharetta, Ga.). Collins finished with a five-point total after adding a game-high three helpers. Junior Brock Spilker (Pasadena, Md.) chipped in with one goal and two assists. Junior Jay Tranello (Syracuse, N.Y.) completed freshman Michael Poerstel (Annapolis, Md.) Limestone’s scoring with one goal each.

Drew and Cole Howell finished with two scores apiece for St. Andrews while Drew finished with a team-high three points added one assist. Seniors Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, N.C.) had one goal and one assist while senior Tom Watt (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) provided two helpers. Freshman Tom Incontrera (Ellicott City, Md.) also had a goal.

The Saints dominated the shot attempts with a 45-23 advantage while both teams picked up 38 ground balls. St. Andrews won 16-of-26 face offs behind 14 wins from sophomore Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) and two wins by sophomore Marcus Kirby (Greensboro, N.C.).

Senior Marty Ward (Syracuse, Md.) made five saves in 60 minutes of action in net for Limestone earning the victory. Sophomore Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) had a game-high 15 stops in 55 minutes of work in cage for the Knights.

St. Andrews will host non-conference Catawba College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in their regular season finale. Limestone will face non-conference Bryant on Sunday, April 29 at 12 Noon at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
