LAURINBURG, N.C.—The No. 1 seed Limestone College men’s lacrosse team used a 10-0 run midway through the game to defeat No. 4 seed Belmont Abbey College, 16-10, in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) Men’s Lacrosse Tournament semifinals advancing to the finals against No. 2 seed and host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
The No. 8 nationally ranked Saints (12-1 Overall) pulled away from the Crusaders (6-9 Overall) behind a six point performance from junior Allen Vaughn (Skaneatdes, N.Y.), who had five goals and one assist.
Limestone jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first but the Abbey scored the final two goals of the period to pull back within one, 3-2. The Saints maintained a 6-4 advantage in the second quarter before a freshman Brian Patridge (Dublin, Ohio) goal with 1:58 left before halftime started the 10-0 run that put the game out of reach.
The Saints defense stepped up during the rally holding the Crusaders scoreless for over 29 minutes. Belmont Abbey never quit and scored the final six goals of the contest in the final five minutes to pull the final deficit to six goals.
Limestone took five more shots, 41-36, but BAC had a slim 39-36 ground ball advantage. The Saints scored on 3-of-4 extra-man opportunities while the Abbey only converted on 1-of-7 EMO chances.
Senior goalkeeper Marty Ward (Syracuse, N.Y.), Co-CVAC Player of the Year, picked up the win in net for the Saints allowing just four goals 53-plus minutes of action while making six saves. Junior Mark Kelske (Bohemia, N.Y.) had 15 of the Crusaders 16 saves in over 52 minutes of time between the pipes but allowed all 16 Limestone goals.
Four other Saints had three point totals for Limestone including junior Brock Spilker (Pasadena, Md.), junior Justin Haworth (Deer Park, N.Y.), senior Ryan Collins (Black River, N.Y.) and sophomore Colin Bell (Victoria, Canada).
Junior Jon Fuggitt (Crofton, Md.) paced the Abbey attack with a hat trick while senior C.J. Robinson (Binghampton, N.Y.) added a pair of goals and a pair of helpers. Freshman Doug Homan (Manasquan, N.J.) chipped in with two goals and an assist for the Crusaders.
