Knights men's lacrosse advances to CVAC finals after edging Queens

LAURINBURG, N.C.—The No. 2 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse team held a slim lead throughout the contest and held off No. 3 seed Queens University of Charlotte, 14-12, in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) Men’s Lacrosse Tournament semifinals advancing to the finals against No. 1 seed Limestone College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

The No. 10 nationally ranked Knights (11-4 Overall) were led by five point performances from the Howell brothers of St. Albert, Alberta, Canada. The 11 wins on the season breaks the SAPC record for wins in one season for the programs NCAA Division II era.

Cole Howell, a sophomore attack, recorded three goals and two assists while older brother Drew Howell, a senior midfielder, posted two goals and a trio of helpers.

The Royals (7-8 Overall), who were down 13-8 in the fourth quarter, received four consecutive scores from senior attack Alexander Tack (Ellicott City, Md.) to pull within one late. However, senior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, N.C.) added an insurance goal for the Knights in the final two minutes as St. Andrews advances to the finals that they will be hosting on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Tack led all scorers with six goals and one assist while five other Queens’ players tallied one goal apiece. Tack scored two of the Royals three man-up goals on eight extra-man opportunities (EMO). St. Andrews scored twice on seven EMO chances.

Senior Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) added a hat trick and one helper for the Knights. Co-CVAC Player of the Year, senior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.), chipped in with two goals and an assist. Senior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) followed with one goal and three assists. Ferreira finished with two goals while senior John Osterritter (Arnold, Md.) completed the Knights scoring with one goal.

QUC had a slim 40-39 shot lead but St. Andrews dominated the loose balls holding a 49-27 ground ball advantage. Sophomore Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) led the way with 11 ground balls while winning 18 of his 26 face offs.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) came up big for SAPC making 13 of his 18 saves in the second half earning his 11th victory in net on the season. Senior Joel Heimbigner (Poway, Calif.) stopped 14 shots for the visitors.
