BANNER ELK, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College scored the first six goals of the game and had 11 different goal scorers as the Knights coasted past Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference foe Lees-McRae College, 24-7, in men’s lacrosse action on Monday afternoon.
The Knights, under third year head coach Michael Lawson, won their ninth game of the season with the 17-goal victory. The nine wins is the highest total since SAPC went to the NCAA Final Four in 2002. The Knights won eight games in both 2004 and 2006.
St. Andrews will try and tie the programs record of 10 wins on Sunday, when they face non-conference St. Leo University at 2:00 p.m. in neutral Clinton, S.C. (Presbyterian College). The Knights finished the ’02 season with a 10-7 overall record.
Senior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.) scored a hat trick in the first quarter as St. Andrews built a dominating 11-1 lead after the first 15 minutes. The Knights advantage grew to 16-2 at halftime with a 5-1 second quarter. SAPC held the Bobcats scoreless in a flawless 6-0 third to lead 22-2 heading into the final stanza. Lees-McRae fought hard with a 5-2 fourth but still fell by the final score of 24-7.
SAPC out shot LMC 45-28; picked up more ground balls 48-39; but only won 14-of-35 face-offs. Junior Alex Kalvin (Marietta, Ga.) won a season-high nine face-offs for the visitors to go along with his second goal of the season.
Mryncza led the Knights offensively with five goals and an assist. Senior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) also had six points with three goals and three assists. Mryncza was credited with his third game-winner of ’07.
Freshman Tom Incontrera (Ellicott City, Md.) had a season-high four goals. Sophomore Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) recorded a hat trick and a pair of assists. Senior Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) notched a two goal performance. Senior Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) totaled one goal and two helpers.
The senior duo of Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, N.C.) and Sean Todd (Union Bridge, Md.) each had one score. Sophomore Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) supplied one goal and one assist while classmate Parker Ferguson (Greensboro, N.C.) netted one goal.
Sophomore John Holt (Dumfries, Va.) scored his first collegiate goal for St. Andrews. Three other Knights added assists including senior Tom Watt (Whitby, Ontario, Canada), sophomore Phil Hardy (Cincinnati, Ohio), and freshman Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.).
Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) made seven saves en route to his ninth victory in the cage for the Knights.
