GAFFNEY, S.C.—The No. 9 Limestone College men’s lacrosse team handed No. 8 St. Andrews its first CVAC loss of the year as the Saints pulled out a 13-9 victory on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
With win, Limestone (9-1 overall/3-0 CVAC) is the only team in the CVAC still undefeated in conference play. The Knights fell to 3-1 in conference play (8-4 overall).
Limestone had a 4-1 lead after the first period, and each squad recorded a goal in the second. Limestone had six goals in the third quarter compared to St. Andrews 3. The Saints increased their lead to 13-5 with two early goals in the fourth period, but the Knights fought back to score four goals in the final seven minutes of the game to cut the score to 13-9.
St. Andrews edged the Saints on shots, 37-33, as Limestone had a 37-34 advantage on ground balls. Each team won 13 face-offs.
Justin Haworth (Deer Park, N.Y.) paced the Saints with six goals and two assists, while Brock Spilker (Pasadena, Md.) and Ryan Collins (Black Rivery, N.Y.) each scored twice. Allen Vaughn (Skaneatdes, N.Y.), Michael Poerstel (Annapolis, Md.), and Greg Kacinko (Alpharetta, Ga.) also chipped in goals.
Mike Piccin (Agawam, Mass.) and Jason Brammall (Greensborough, Australia) picked up seven and six ground balls, respectively. Marty Ward (Syracuse, N.Y.) had 12 saves for the Saints.
St. Andrews sophomore Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and senior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) each had two goals as five other Knights players scored. Howell also tallied two assists. Goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) had 10 saves.
St. Andrews visits CVAC foe Lees-McRae College on Monday in Banner Elk, N.C with first face-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
