LAURINBURG, N.C.—Sophomore Cole Howell and senior Dalen Crouse, both from St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, each supplied the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse team with seven points apiece en route to a 16-12 upset victory over No. 6 nationally ranked Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon.

The Knights, winners of four straight games including their first win over a nationally ranked team, improved to 7-3 on the season. The Panthers fell to 2-3. SAPC is also a perfect 6-0 at home.

Senior Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) scored two extra-man opportunity (EMO) goals to give St. Andrews a quick 2-0 lead before Adelphi got on the board. The Knights surged out to a 6-1 lead with the next four scores but the Panthers fought back with the final thee goals of the opening quarter to trail 6-4 after 15 minutes.

Adelphi kept the momentum to start the second quarter and scored three of the first four goals. Freshman Ian Kuchta’s (Norwalk, Conn.) goal to cap the rally tied the game at 7-7.

The Knights regained the lead for the rest of the half just 27 seconds later as senior Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) ripped a shot into the back of the Panthers goal. Senior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.) added another tally for St. Andrews but Kuchta scored a last minute goal that cut the Knights lead in half, 9-8, at halftime.

Kuchta struck again just seven seconds out of the intermission to tie the contest for the second and final time at 9-9. However, an Adelphi face-off man was called for an illegal stick on the ensuing face-off and SAPC took advantage with three EMO goals in the non-releasable penalty to take control of the game. The Knights ended up out scoring the Panthers 5-2 in the third to take a 14-10 lead into the final quarter.

Each team scored two goals in the fourth as St. Andrews maintained the four-goal advantage to the final horn. The Knights scored seven EMO goals on eight opportunities including both of their scores in the fourth.
