LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior attack-men Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Canada) and Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.) combined for 21 points as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse team opened up the 2007 season with a 19-8 victory over non-conference Mars Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Knights Field.
Crouse scored a game-high five goals as the Knights (1-0 Overall) led for the whole contest. Sophomore David Hodgins (Windsor, Canada) led the Mountain Lions (0-1) with three goals and an assist.
SAPC scored the first four goals of the game and held a 5-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes. Mars Hill scored two quick goals in the first 23 seconds of the second quarter to pull within one but the Knights scored the final seven goals of the half to take a 12-4 advantage into the intermission.
After both teams scored two goals apiece in the third quarter, St. Andrews out scored the Lions 5-2 in the final stanza to pull away to the 11-goal victory.
The Knights out shot Mars Hill 52-22 and scooped up 30 more ground balls (65-35). Sophomore Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) won 18 face offs as SAPC dominated the draws, 21-10. Young also posted a game-high 15 ground balls.
Crouse finished with 11 points after adding six assists to his five goals. Mryncza matched Crouse with six helpers. Mryncza and sophomore Cole Howell (St. Albert, Canada) each scored four goals for SAPC.
Senior Drew Howell’s (St. Albert, Canada) lone goal was the game-winner while younger brother Cole had the only extra-man score for St. Andrews. Three freshman Knights scored their first collegiate goal including Douglas Lipka (Silver Spring, Md.), Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.), and Courtland Fudge (Severna Park, Md.). Sophomore Max Kalkstein (Mystic, Conn.) had the other goal for SAPC while senior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, N.C.) chipped in with an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) made six saves to earn the 60-minute victory in net.
Junior Parker Harrison (Cary, N.C.) and freshman Danny Farmer (Calgary, Canada) both scored a pair of Mars Hill goals. Freshman Kevin Woods (New Market, Canada) added a short-handed score while four other Lions provided assists.
Sophomore netminder Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) had a game-high 12 saves in 50 minutes of action but took the season-opening loss.
St. Andrews will next visit CVAC rival Pfeiffer University (Misenheimer, N.C.) on next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
