MARS HILL, NC—The Mars Hill College lacrosse team defeated Deep South Conference rival St. Andrews Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon in Meares Stadium by a score of 13-9.
MHC improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the league while the Knights fell to 6-5 overall and 6-1 in the DSC. The win puts MHC in a tie for first place in the Deep South Conference.
Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ontario) led the Lions to the win scoring seven of the squad's goals in the game. He added an assist to total eight points in the win.
Chapman scored his third consecutive goal of the game with 8:15 left in the first quarter to give MHC a 3-2 advantage they would not relinquish the remainder of the contest. The Lions led 5-2 after the first quarter of play but St. Andrews out scored MHC 4-3 in the second frame to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with Mars Hill enjoying an 8-6 lead.
The second half was closely played with MHC only out scoring St. Andrews by a single goal in both the third and fourth quarters. MHC won the third frame 2-1 and then won the last quarter, 3-2 to make the final tally, 13-9.
The Lions out shot St. Andrews 42-to-33 and won the ground ball battle 51-to-44. MHC also won 15-of-25 face-offs. Neither team was able to capitalize on extra-man opportunities as they combined to miss out on nine man-up chances.
Following Chapman's stellar performance was David Kemp (Webster, NY) with three goals and Brad Campbell (Middleton, WI) with two goals and an assist. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made 19 saves in the victory.
Junior Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) led St. Andrews with three goals followed by juniors Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) and Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) who recorded two goals apiece. Mryncza and junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) both supplied two assists. Ferreira and freshman Keenan Stout (Potomac Falls, VA) had one goal apiece while senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) added on helper.
Freshman goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) also played the entire game in the net for St. Andrews and made 13 saves.
The Knights host DSC rival Limestone College on Wednesday at Scotland High School. The opening face off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
