CHARLOTTE, NC—Nine different Knights scored to lead visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 13-8 Deep South Conference (DSC) victory over Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday at the Queens Sports Complex.

The Knights, who have won five straight games and six consecutive DSC contests, improved to 6-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Royals fell to 2-4 and 2-2.

“We (SAPC) are ecstatic in what we have done so far,” said second year head coach Michael Lawson.

Queens, who was one of five Deep South teams sitting one game behind St. Andrews heading into Saturday’s action, surged out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with an opening goal by Zach Jacobs and three straight by Alexander Tack.

A late goal by junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) on a senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) assist with 11 seconds remaining in the opening frame got the ball rolling for the Knights.

An illegal stick penalty to start the second quarter allowed junior Dan Hartzell ( Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) to score his first of the day. St. Andrews maintained the momentum and catapulted into the lead with four more goals in the second.

Freshman goaltender Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) made eight of his 14 saves in the first half to help lead SAPC to a 6-4 lead at halftime.

The Royals tied everything at six apiece with the first two goals out of the intermission on tallies by Stephan LeBlanc and Jacobs. Freshman defender John Osterritter (Arnold, MD) scored his first collegiate goal to regain the slim lead for St. Andrews but Andy Capallo scored the final goal of the third to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the last 15 minutes.

The Knights, who out scored Queens 6-1 in the fourth, scored the first five goals of the final stanza to take control. Junior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) put St. Andrews on top for good with the first goal of the run and junior Drew Howell’s (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) following goal was credited as the game-winner.

Hull (5-3) made four saves in the final quarter to give the Knights the opportunity to rush to the five-goal victory.

“We are getting huge play in between the pipes,” expressed Lawson.

Hartzell continued his consistent play with the hat trick and two assists while junior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) also had five points with two goals and three helpers. Crouse finished with two scores and Fitzgerald provided a trio of assists. Junior Sean Tood (Union Bridge, MD) and freshman Zachary Miller (Middletown, DE) both scored once.

“Hartzell and Mryncza have been unbelievable but some key guys on both offense and defense have been stepping up. We have a lot of guys that are in the mix,” continued Lawson.

Tack led the Royals with a game-high four goals and two assists for six points.

St. Andrews will have a week to prepare for DSC rival Mars Hill College, when they visit the Mountain Lions on Saturday, April 1 at 2:00 p.m.

“I am really pumped for these guys as we progress towards coming together as a team for a whole game but we still have three tough conference games that will determine our whereabouts for the postseason.”
