SALISBURY, NC—Junior attacks Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) and Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) each scored five goals as St. Andrews defeated host Catawba 18-5 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.
The Knights, who are the only team in the Deep South that is still sporting a perfect conference record, improved to 5-4 overall and 5-0 in the DSC, while Catawba fell to 2-5 and 2-2.
St. Andrews used a pair of man-up goals in the opening period to take a 6-0 lead and built a 9-0 edge by the half. Mryncza had four of his goals before the break. Catawba sliced the lead to 11-3 by the end of the third period, but the Knights scored the first five goals of the final stanza to pull away.
Hartzell added three assists to finish the game with eight points while increasing his team-high goal total to 24. Mryncza’s five tallies helped keep him retain his team-high 36 points.
Freshmen Max Kalkstein (Mystic, CT) and Keenan Stout (Potomac Falls, VA) each had two goals. Senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) chipped in with a goal and two assists while junior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta) added two helpers. Juniors Sean Todd (Union Bridge, MD), Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canda), and Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) all found the back of the Indians goal once.
Freshman goaltender Nate Hull (Millersville, MD), the reigning DSC Defensive Player of the Week, won his third straight game in net with a game-high 15 saves. Hull improved to 4-3 on the season.
The Knights held slim advantages of 38-33 on shots and 42-37 on ground balls while each team won 13-of-26 face offs.
Five different players scored goals for Catawba, while Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) delivered two assists.
St. Andrews will go for its fifth consecutive victory when they travel to DSC foe Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
