BELMONT, NC—St. Andrews jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and held at least a three-goal lead the rest of the way coasting to a 15-7 Deep South Conference (DSC) men’s lacrosse victory at Belmont Abbey on Tuesday.
The Knights improved to 3-4 overall and 3-0 in the DSC, while the Crusaders fell to 2-4 on the year and 0-3 in the conference.
The Knights asserted their authority early, sprinting out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with four different scorers. Senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD), freshman Kyle Loda (Vienna, VA), junior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) all found the back of the BAC goal in the opening quarter.
BAC started the second quarter with a goal from Aaron Flood but St. Andrews made it 6-1 with back-to-back goals from junior Drew Howell ( St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and Loda.
The Abbey went into the half with a little bit of momentum scoring twice in the final four minutes to trail 6-3 at intermission. Flood tallied with 3:25 remaining and then struck again with only three seconds on the clock.
St. Andrews asserted their presence with the first four goals in the third period before the Crusaders made it 10-4 with less than four minutes left in the quarter. SAPC scored again in the third and put two more up early in the fourth for a 13-4 advantage. The two teams then traded two goals each in 1:37, followed by BAC getting one last tally from Flood at the 3:10 mark.
Fresham Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) played well between the pipes for St. Andrews, making 11 saves and scooping up three ground balls. Hull improved to 2-3 on the year.
Fitzgerald and Howell each recorded a hat trick. Junior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) and freshman Max Kalkstein (Mystic, CT) both provided a goal and two assists. Junior Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) added two goals and two assists. Ferreira and Crouse each chipped in with a goal and a helper. Loda finished with two goals while freshman Keenan Stout (Potomac Falls, VA) completed the Knights box score with a goal.
Flood finished with a game-high four goals and Korey Earles added a goal and an assist.
St. Andrews will attempt to even its overall record to .500 and remain perfect in the DSC when they visit Wingate University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
