MYRTLE BEACH, SC —After returning home from New York early Tuesday morning, the St. Andrews men’s lacrosse team hit the road a day later with an active roster of only 15 players. The Knights headed to the beach where No. 7 nationally ranked Dowling University spoiled the trip with a 17-6 victory on Wednesday at neutral Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Lions opened up the 2006 season 1-0 while St. Andrews, who has dropped four straight to teams all ranked in the nations top-10, fell to 1-4.

The Knights return home for a Deep South Conference (DSC) showdown with Presbyterian College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. SAPC is a perfect 1-0 in the DSC.

Chris Dupignac and CJ Leary scored the first two goals of the contest to give Dowling a quick 2-0 lead five minutes into action. Freshmen Kyle Loda (Vienna, VA) and Keenan Stout (Potomac Falls, VA) each scored their second goal of the season helping the Knights erase the two-goal deficit and tie everything at 2-2.

The Golden Lions regained a 4-2 advantage after the first quarter with two late goals by Ryan Campbell and Nick Cotter. Leary scored the next two goals to start the second to record the hat trick. Leary’s tallies and a three-goal flurry in a 29-second span helped Dowling to a 7-0 quarter and an 11-2 halftime lead.

Dowling held slim scoring advantages in the final two frames out scoring St. Andrews 4-3 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth to take the 11-goal victory. The Golden Lions won 16-of-25 face offs, held a 49-21 shot advantage and grabbed more groundballs with a 50-32 edge.

Stout led the Knights with two goals. Junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) had a goal and an assist while freshman Zachary Miller (Middletown, DE) provided two helpers. Senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) and junior Tom Watt (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) each added one goal.
