GARDEN CITY, NY—Junior midfielder Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) recorded a season-high four points for visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but the No. 4 nationally ranked Adelphi University men’s lacrosse team took the 14-6 non-conference victory on Tuesday in Garden City, New York.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 2-0, while St. Andrews fell to 1-3 on the season.

Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead when Dale Pescitelli (Shoreham, NY) scored two minutes into action. Just over six minutes later Andrew Ashkenazy (Oceanside, NY) found the net twice, giving the Panthers a 3-0 edge with 3:39 to play in the quarter. Brendan Morgan (Bayside, NY) followed that up with a goal of his own with just 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter, giving the Panthers a 4-0 advantage after just one period.
The goals kept coming as Adelphi reeled off three more, two from Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) and one from Stephen Mortimer (Adelaide, Australia) before the Knights could respond.
Junior attack Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) put SAPC on the board with a extra-man goal.
Jonathan St. Jules (Brooklyn, NY) slipped one into the St. Andrews net two minutes before the half to five the Panthers a commanding 8-1 lead at the half.
Adelphi put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring St. Andrews 6-1 in the period, including three more goals from Green, giving AU a 14-2 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Knights would rally in the fourth, outscoring the host Panthers 4-0, but ran out of time, falling 14-6.
Ferreira scored the Knights only goal of the third on a junior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) pass. Hartzell posted the hat trick with two more goals in the fourth while Ferreira and senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) had the other tallies. Ferreira assisted twice and Mryncza once in the final 15 minutes.
The Panthers held the edge in every major category including shots (45-31), ground balls (60-43) and clears (33-31). Brian Volpi (St. Lawrence, NY) picked up eight saves and his second win of the season, while freshman Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) made eight stops in the loss.
St. Andrews travels to Myrtle Beach, SC, for a neutral site non-conference game against No. 7 nationally ranked Dowling University on Thursday. The showdown in Doug Shaw Stadium is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start.
