No. 1 NYIT escapes with 14-10 men's lax win over SAPC

LAURINBURG, NC—The defending national champion New York Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team, who trailed for the whole first half, scored 11 goals in the final two quarters to slip past host St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 14-10, on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears, who are ranked No. 1 nationally, improved to 2-0 on the season while the Knights fell to 1-1.
St. Andrews jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with great shot selection, finding the back of the net on four of five shots. Knights’ freshman goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) made four of his 17 saves in the first frame to hold NYIT scoreless.
Junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) extended the SAPC lead to five with the opening goal of the second stanza.
After Hull and the Knights defense held the Bears scoreless for the first 25 minutes, NYIT took advantage of two straight extra-man opportunities (EMO) and a Brett Teitjen (Garden City, NY) tally capped a 3-0 run by NYIT. St. Andrews held a 5-3 advantage at intermission
The Knights regrouped at halftime and a senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) goal at 10:33 provided SAPC with a 6-3 lead.
The NYITY Bears answered with six consecutive goals including four even-strength tallies book-ended by to EMO scores. Fitzgerald stopped the rally with a man-up goal that trimmed the score to 9-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Knights pulled to within one on an extra-man goal by junior Drew Howell at 14:20. It marked Howell’s second straight hat trick to start the season.
Teitjen, Mike Maxwell (West Babylon, NY), and Joe Droge (Port Jeff, NY) scored the next three goals that allowed the Bears to gain a 12-8 lead with seven minutes to go. The two teams split the final four goals as NYIT held on for the four-goal victory.
Joseph Vasold (Wantagh, NY) won 20-of-25 face offs for the Bears. NYIT out shot St. Andrews 47-21, grabbed 10 more ground balls (66-56), and went 5-for-9 on the EMO.
Teitjen led the Bears with four goals; Droge scored twice and added five helpers; Keith Henderson (Port Jeff Sta., NY) added two goals and two assists; Kevin Hennessy (W. Babylon, NY) and Maxwell each had a goal and an assist; Al Maione (West Islip, NY) and Andrew Taylor (Floral Park, NY) both scored once; and Matt Dolan (N. Massapequa, NY) chipped in with an assist.
Fitzgerald finished with four goals for St. Andrews. Howell also finished with four points (3 goals, 1 assist) while Ferreira had a goal and two helpers. Junior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) had three assists; senior Bryan Riddell (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) supplied a goal and an assist; and freshman Zachary Miller (Middletown, DE) added an assist.
Freshman netminder Tom Trgo (Merrick, NY) picked up the win in net for the Bears.
The Knights will entertain No. 5 Mercyhurst on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. while NYIT hosts their home opener against No. 10 Notre Dame De Nameur on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
