St. Andrews posted seven goals in the first and third quarters and held a commanding 18-8 advantage going into the last frame. Mars Hill outscored the Knights 5-3 in the final 15 minutes but it was not enough as the Knights cruised to the eight-goal victory.

Knights lax win’s regular season finale
April 16, 2005
BANNER ELK, NC— St. Andrews Presbyterian College outscored Deep South Conference rival Lees-McRae 7-3 in the final quarter to end its regular season with a 15-10 road win on Saturday.
The Knights snapped an eight-game winless streak with the victory and improved to 4-10 overall and 4-3 in the DSC. With the win St. Andrews secured the No. 4 seed in the 2005 DSC Tournament and will host No. 5 seed Mars Hill College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Knights defeated the Mountain Lions 13-7 in the season opener for both schools.
“It’s a big deal that we have home field advantage in the first round of the tournament as its good to play in front of our fans and not have to travel all the way to Mars Hill,” said head coach Michael Lawson.
St. Andrews jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter but the Bobcats (1-11/0-7) rallied with three of the four goals in the second frame to cut the deficit to 5-4 at halftime.
The two teams split six goals in the third quarter and the Knights entered the final 15 minutes leading by a slim 8-7 margin. Once again, each team alternated the first four goals of the fourth and Nik Nixon’s goal with 8:38 remaining put Lees-McRae within one at 10-9.
However, the Knights ended the game on a 5-1 run in the final eight minutes that featured bookend goals by Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) that were assisted by Bryan Riddell (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada).
Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) led St. Andrews with four goals. Fitzgerald supplied a hat trick and St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, natives Drew Howell and Kyle Weiher each had two goals. Phil Arana (Raleigh, NC) recorded his first three points of the season with two goals and an assist. Riddell had a five-point game with a goal and four assists. Chris Stott (Manchester, England) had four points including three assists.

Goalkeeper Kyle Grella (Wilmington, NC) picked up his first collegiate win in net for the Knights making six saves over 40 minutes of action. Goalie Adam Canoy made 20 saves in the loss for Lees-McRae.
“It feels good to get a win under our belt,” continued Lawson. “It was a long time coming and we had key guys that stepped up. Our backup goalie (Grella) played as well as he could with a .500 save percentage and kept us in the game.”
The Knights plan to use the experience of playing an extremely difficult schedule this year to help them in the conference tournament and in the future. Seven of SAPC’s 10 losses this season have come against teams that are either ranked in the top-10 or were ranked at one time this season.
“We want to take St. Andrews to the next level and if we don’t play the best teams we will never get there,” explained Lawson. “We knew there would be bumps in the road this season with a small team but I’m excited about next year with strong returnees and a strong recruiting class as we will make huge strides.” |

2005 St. Andrews Men’s Lacrosse Preview
The St. Andrews men’s lacrosse team will look to build on an 8-8 season last year that included going 6-1 in the Deep South Conference. The Knights finished second the 2004 DSC regular season and lost in the tournament semifinals to Catawba.
First year head coach Michael Lawson, who comes to St. Andrews from Anne Arundel Community College, will guide the Knights. Lawson hopes to take SAPC lacrosse to the next step in division II lacrosse starting with this season.
The Knights have a thin lineup of 22 players but they did not lose much with 15 returnees. Over 50-percent of St. Andrews starting lineup returns including three DSC All-Conference players. All 22 Knights will be called upon to contribute.
Senior Chris Sherman will replace All-Conference goalkeeper Kevin Woods in net for the Knights. Sherman played in four games last season and picked up one win.
The Knights look to have a strong defense that consists of All-Conference Kris Hartzell along with Dan Holoubek, Peter Swink and James Tippett. The starting long-stick middie for the Knights will be Jared Hess. St. Andrews plans on lowering its goals against average and increasing its man-down percentage because of strong play at defense and in goal.
All Deep South Conference players Kyle Weiher and Pat Fitzgerald will provide the core of the Knights midfield. Fitzgerald had 16 goals and 12 assists last season and Weiher tallied 24 goals. Bryan Riddell will move from defense to midfield. There will also be significant playing time from Dan Hartzell, Drew Howell and Tom Watt.
The Knights have six players listed at the attack position and plan on getting an equal amount of scoring opportunities from each of them. Everyone will be expected to contribute on the offensive end as they will all get touches. Dalen Crouse had 24 goals and 13 assists for the Knights last season while Chris Stott added 12 goals. Freshmen Cole Howell and Zack Miller, who is recovering from an off-season injury, will see considerable time for the Knights.
Sherman, Stott, Tippett and Hess are the only four seniors on the Knights roster and will be looked up to provide the leadership for a young and talented St. Andrews team. |
