Five
Knights Earn DSC All-Conference Honors
Herberson All-Tournament Selection
April
30, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian
College men’s lacrosse team had five different players
get named to the 2004 DSC All-Conference teams. Midfielder Kyle
Weiher was selected to the All-Conference First Team while attack
Jimmy Herberson, midfielder Pat Fitzgerald, defender Kris Hartzell,
and goalie Kevin Woods were awarded Second Team honors. At the
conclusion of the DSC tourney, Herberson was also selected to
the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore
Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) led the Knights with 97
groundballs and a .497 face-off percentage (75-for-151). Kyle was
a DSC Player of the Week in the opening week of the season and also
chipped in on offense with 24 goals (T-2nd on the team) and one assist
for 25 points (fifth) after playing in all 16 games for the Knights.
Weiher also had a .436 shooting percentage and one game-winning goal
against Queens.
Senior
Jimmy Herberson (Oakland Mills, MD) proved why he was a pre-season
All-American leading the Knights offensively with 33 goals, 11 assists,
and 44 points. Jimmy also had a .393 shooting percentage, 67 groundballs,
and the game-winning goal in a one-goal game victory over Wingate.
Herberson finished his season strong being named to the DSC All Tournament
team after scoring nine goals in two playoff games.
Sophomore
Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) was a strong presence for the Knights
at the midfield position. Pat always seemed to step up big late leading
the team in game winning goals with three including an overtime winner
against Catawba. Fitzgerald finished the season with 16 goals, 12
assists, 28 points, and 50 groundballs.
Sophomore
K. Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) was a staple to the Knights
defensive force that held opponents to a .309 shooting percentage
on the season. Kris was second on the team in groundballs with 89
and chipped in offensively with one goal and two assists.
Senior
Kevin Woods (Setauket, NY) was the backbone to the Knights defense
earning seven of St. Andrews’ eight victories in net. Kevin
finished the season with a 12.12 goals against average and a .579
save percentage while facing a strong schedule. Woods led the Knights
to a second place finish in the Deep South and was named the DSC
Defensive Player of the Week on March 29th.

Knights
Advance to DSC Semi’s With A 11-9 Win Over Queens

20, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—Junior Chris Stott (Manchester,
England) scored three goals including the game winner for the
St. Andrews men’s lacrosse team helping the Knights win
their first round Deep South Conference Tournament game against
Queens University of Charlotte 11-9 on Tuesday afternoon.
The host
Knights (8-7 record) entered the contest as the No. 2 seed and held
off a late Royal rally to win by two goals. Queens, the No. 7 seed,
finish their season at 3-11.
After David
Overberg (Cincinnati, OH) gave the Royals an early 1-0 lead the Knights
answered with the final two goals of the first period to take a 2-1
advantage. Freshman Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta) started SAPC’s
scoring and Crouse scored his first two-minutes later.
Joshua
Bryce (Woodbridge, VA) and Benjamin Clausen (Durham, NC) put Queens
back on top with the next two goals. The Royals maintained the 3-2
lead until 19 seconds left in the second quarter when pre-season
All-American Jimmy Herberson (Oakland Mills, MD) netted his first
goal of the game tying the game up at halftime.
Queens
grabbed their last lead of the game early in the third on an extra-man
goal by Alexander Tack (Ellicott City, MD). The Knights then seemed
to shut the door on the Royals scoring the next eight goals to build
up an 11-4 lead with 6:32 remaining in the game.
The Royals
did not give up and scored five late goals to cut the deficit to
two but St. Andrews strong play and a late Queens’ penalty
wiped away the comeback attempt.
Senior
goalkeeper Kevin Woods (Setauket, NY) made 15 saves in net for the
Knights helping the Knights advance. Woods faced 37 shots and had
five groundballs to pick up his seventh win of the season.
Herberson
finished with two goals and an assist for the Knights while Dan Hartzell
(Lacombe, Alberta) and Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) had one goal
and two assists apiece. Kris Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta) had a game
high seven groundballs. Ray Gayhardt (Laurel, MD), Kyle Weiher (St.
Albert, Alberta), and Tom Watt (Ajax, Ontario) completed St. Andrews
scoring with one goal each.
Bryce led
the Royals attack with three goals and Tack finished with two goals
and two assists. Daniel McMahon (Syracuse, NY) went 13-for-22 on
face off to lead both teams.
St. Andrews
advances to the semifinals of the DSC Tournament and will play No.
3 seed Catawba on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Salisbury, NC.

Wheeling
Jesuit Holds Off SAPC Lacrosse

GREENSBORO,
NC—The Wheeling Jesuit men's
lacrosse team was able to hold off a late four-goal charge by
St. Andrews for a 10-7 victory on Thursday afternoon at the neutral
Pyramid Sports Complex in Greensboro. The Cardinals improve to
7-4 while the Knights fell to 7-6.
Dennis
McKenna gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with two quick goals in the
first period. After three more goals Wheeling Jesuit carried a 5-0
lead into halftime, as the Knights were only able to produce six
shots in the half.
Zach Mryncza
put St. Andrews on the scoreboard with an extra-man goal at the 14:52
mark in the third on a Dalen Crouse pass. The Cardinals scored three
of the next four goals in the period to build up their largest lead
of the game, 8-2.
The Knights
put on the pressure during the fourth period scoring five goals on
10 shots to cut the lead to three at 10-7, but could not get any
closer as the time ran out.
Dom Marzano
led Wheeling Jesuit with three goals and one assist including the
game winner with 35 seconds left in the third. Six other Cardinals
scored including the goalie, Nick Asmo, who scored with 6:30 remaining
in the fourth.
Jimmy Herberson,
who scored two straight goals late making the game interesting down
the stretch, led the Knights. Chris Stott tallied a goal and two
assists while Dan Hartzell contributed with a goal and an assist.
The Cardinals
held the shooting advantage, 36-23, but lost 13-of-20 face offs as
Ray Gayhardt won 12 of them for the Knights. Asmo picked up the win
after making 10 saves on 17 shots and only allowing three goals in
his 53 1/2 minutes in net. Kevin Woods took the loss after allowing
nine of the 10 Cardinal goals in 50 minutes.
St. Andrews
will finish its regular season play against Mercyhurst on April 17th
in St. Pauls, Maryland.

Limestone
Lacrosse Snaps Knights DSC Undefeated Streak, 25-8
April
3, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—Junior midfielder Nolan
Heavenor provided nine points for the Limestone College men’s
lacrosse team in Saturday’s Deep South Conference match-up
with host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on ‘Senior Day’.
The Saints, who are ranked # 2 nationally, remained perfect with
the 25-8 victory to improve to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the DSC
while the Knights were handed their first conference loss to
fall to 7-5 and 6-1.
Limestone
grabbed a 5-2 first quarter lead with three goals by Roger Vyse (Six
Nations Reserve, Ontario). After a quick second period goal by David
Wooster (Annapolis, MD), the Knights answered with two goals by Drew
Howell (Edmonton, Alberta) and Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta)
to cut the deficit to 6-4, which would be the closest that St. Andrews
would get.
The Saints
would score five of the last six goals of the first half to build
up an 11-5 halftime lead. SAPC held in during most of the third period
scoring three of the next four goals but could never catch Limestone.
The Saints pulled away to the 17-goal win scoring the final 10 goals
of the game.
After Heavenor’s
(Victoria, BC) five goals and four assists Vyse and Wooster chipped
in with eight and seven points, respectively. Vyse led both teams
with seven goals. Wooster and Robert Woody (Edgewater, MD) tallied
four goals a piece in the win while goalie Mary Ward (Syracuse, NY)
picked up the win in net making three saves in 29 minutes.
Crouse,
Jimmy Herberson (Oakland Mills, MD), and Zach Mryncza (Baltimore,
MD) led the Knights with three points each. Crouse recorded three
goals to improve his team leading goals total to 23. Goalie Kevin
Woods (Setauket, NY), who is the current DSC defensive player of
the week, made 20 saves for the Knights.
Limestone
out shot the Knights 60-23 and won 29 out of the 36 faces offs. The
Saints also took advantage of their extra man opportunities scoring
seven goals on nine attempts.
St. Andrews
will travel to Greensboro, NC to play Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday
afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Knights
Lacrosse Edges League Foe Catawba in OT, 14-13
March
31, 2004
SALISBURY,
NC—Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore,
MD) scored with 2:27 remaining in overtime as St. Andrews defeated
host Catawba 14-13 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse
action on Wednesday afternoon. St. Andrews scored the game’s
final three goals and improves to 7-4 overall and 6-0 in the
DSC. Catawba had a three-game winning streak snapped and falls
to 5-4 and 2-1.
St. Andrews
jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 7-5 edge at the half. The Knights
increased the margin to 8-5 with the opening goal of the second half,
but Catawba then scored six consecutive goals to go on top 11-8 with
12:14 left. St. Andrews rallied to tie the score at 11-11 on a goal
by Tom Watt (Ajax, ONT, CANADA) with 4:32 remaining.
Catawba
got goals by Todd Watkins (Greensboro, NC) and Craig Emory (Beltsville,
MD) to regain a 13-11 edge with 2:15 to go. The Knights rallied again,
getting a goal from Drew Howell (Edmonton, ALBERTA, CANADA) with
1:14 to go and a tying score from Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, ALBERTA,
CANADA) with 34 seconds remaining to force extra time.
Zach Mryncza
(Baltimore, MD) led the Knights with six points, scoring four goals
with a pair of assists. Dalen Crouse (St. Alber, ALBERTA, CANADA)
added three goals and an assist. David Dunnuck (Greensboro, NC) scored
five goals for Catawba, while Emory had three goals. The Indians
held a 41-26 edge in shots, with St. Andrews goalie Kevin Woods (Setauket,
NY) recording 18 saves.
The Knights
will enter Saturday’s home finale undefeated in the conference
and winners of three straight. SAPC will host Limestone, who is ranked
No. 2 nationally, at 2:00 p.m. for the DSC regular season title on ‘Senior
Day’.

Kevin
Woods Named DSC Defensive Player of the Week

ROCK
HILL, SC—St.
Andrews Presbyterian College senior goalkeeper Kevin Woods was
named the Deep South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the
league announced today.
Woods,
a senior from Setauket, New York (Ward Melville HS), played an important
role in the Knights two Deep South Conference wins last week. He
allowed only 13 goals on 44 shots, while making 24 saves in the two
wins. He recorded nine saves in a 15-5 victory over Queens, and followed
that with a 15-save performance in a 16-8 victory over Mars Hill.

SAPC
Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Unbeaten Molloy, 13-4
March
16, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—Mike
Zabielski recorded four goals and four assists for the Molloy
College men’s lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon as the
Lions defeated host St. Andrews Presbyterian College 13-4. Molloy
remained perfect at 5-0 while the Knights fell to 4-4.
The Lions
scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back. Molloy
led 6-1 at halftime and carried the momentum to a nine-goal win.
The Knights,
who are missing several players due to injury and illness, had four
different goal scorers including Dalen Crouse, Kyle Weiher, Chris
Stott, and Sean Jurecic.
Along with
Zabielski, Molloy had four other multiple goal scores in the game
including Tim Stevens with three and Dom Toscano, Marcelino Rosales,
and Wilbert Mendoza with two each.
Goalkeeper
Joseph Labella picked up the win making seven saves while only allowing
two goals in his 54 minutes of work in net. Even though SAPC goalie
Kevin Woods allowed 10 goals, he kept the game closer that it could
have been with 14 saves.
St. Andrews
will look to bounce back on March 24th when they travel to Deep South
Conference rival Queens University of Charlotte. The Knights will
try to improve on their perfect 3-0 DSC record at that time.

Edge Wingate in DSC Lacrosse, 9-8
March
10, 2004
WINGATE,
NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian
College men’s lacrosse team scored four third-quarter goals
to take a 9-8 Deep South Conference win over host Wingate University
Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin
Field on the Wingate campus.
With the
win, St. Andrews Presbyterian improves to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in
the DSC. Wingate is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the DSC.
Wingate
led 6-5 at halftime. Bulldog senior attack Steve Maxwell scored the
first goal of the third quarter to give the hosts a 7-5 lead at the
12:04 mark. St. Andrews responded with four goals to take the lead
and the win.
St. Andrews
freshman attack Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) scored
two of the Knights’ four goals during the crucial run. Fellow
freshman attack Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) led the Knights with
three goals and two assists on the afternoon. Mryncza improved his
team and conference leading point total to 29 points in six games.
Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada), Dan Hartzell (Lacombe,
Alberta, Canada), and Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) each added a
goal for St. Andrews.
Knight
junior attack Jimmy Herberson (Oakland Mills, MD) scored the final
goal of the 4-0 run to put St. Andrews up 9-7 with 33 seconds remaining
in the third quarter. Wingate midfield John Martin tallied on an
assist from Chris Manwaring to cut the lead to 9-8 with 14:35 to
go in the fourth quarter.
Martin’s
goal would be the last score of the contest, allowing Herberson’s
tally to hold up as the game winner. On the afternoon, Martin led
the Bulldogs with a career-high three goals. Blake Taylor had two
goals and one assist for the hosts. Maxwell had one goal and two
assists, while Manwaring also contributed one goal and two assists.
In goal,
St. Andrews sophomore netminder Kevin Woods (Setauket, NY) went the
distance, notching 16 saves. Wingate goalie Jonathan Cofer also played
60 minutes recording eight saves.
The Knights
will travel to Baltimore, MD on Saturday for a neutral site contest
against Long Island University – Southampton at 2:00 p.m.

Lacrosse Pounds Dominican, 15-5

LAURINBURG,
NC—Four different Knights
scored three goals as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s
lacrosse team coasted to an easy 15-5 victory over Dominican
Friday afternoon on ‘The Moat’.
St. Andrews
jumped out early scoring the first four goals of the game. Rob Decarlo
finally put the Chargers on the board with 1:26 left in the first
quarter. The Knights then put the game away in the second period
scoring the next seven goals, building the lead up to 11-1.
Dominican
scored three late goals to make the score look closer than it really
was. Starting goalie Kevin Woods (Setauket, NY) only allowed one
goal in his 27 minutes of playing time for the Knights. All three
other SAPC goalies saw some playing time.
Zach Mryncza
(Baltimore, MD), who leads the Knights with 24 points, led the scoring
attack with three goals and four assists. Jimmy Herberson (Oakland
Mills, MD), Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada), and Dalen
Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) each tallied three goals. Crouse
added three assists and Weiher was 14-for-15 on face-offs. Sean Juresic
(Mt. Laurel, NJ) and Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) finished
the scoring barrage with two and one goals, respectively.
St. Andrews
jumped back over .500 at 3-2 with the victory while Dominican fell
to 0-3.
The Knights
will next travel to Deep South Conference rival Wingate University
on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

Knights
Men’s Lacrosse Falls To NDNU
March

LAURINBURG,
NC—The Notre Dame de Namur
(Belmont, CA) lacrosse team escaped with a 13-10 victory over
host St. Andrews Presyberian College on ‘The Moat’ Monday
afternoon.
The Argonauts
rallied to tie the game from four different deficits before scoring
six goals in the fourth quarter and winning by three. James Mutscheller
(Sandy, UT) gave NDNU an 11-9 lead with 5:21 left in the last period,
scoring on a Marc Mackrides (Media, PA) pass. That goal was the third
of the game for Mutscheller and proved to be the game-winning tally.
The Knights
Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) increased his team leading points total
to 17 with one goal and four assists. Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta,
Canada), Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) and Jimmy Herberson (Oakland
Mills, MD) each tallied two goals for St. Andrews.
Mackrides
led NDNU with four goals and two assists while Cody Hart (Boise,
ID) and Neil Butterfield (Monroe, WA) followed with two goals apiece.
Goalie
Nick Ries (West Linn, OR) picked up the win in net allowing 10 goals
on 40 shots while making 20 saves. Kevin Woods’ (Setauket,
NY) 18 saves were not enough for the Knights as the Argonauts scored
13 goals on 40 shots.
Both teams
hold a 2-2 overall record after the game. St. Andrews will host Dominican
on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Knights
Lacrosse Powers Past Pfeiffer, 12-4

21, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—Zach Mryncza’s
(Baltimore, MD) team-high six points helped the St. Andrews Presbyterian
College men’s lacrosse team cruise to a 12-4 Deep South
Conference victory over Pfeiffer University Saturday afternoon
on ‘The Moat”.
Mryncza’s
two goals and four assists helped the Knights retain the Laurinheimer
Jug and improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the DSC. The Falcons begin
their season 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the DSC.
Two late
first period goals gave SAPC a 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The Knights maintained the momentum scoring the first nine goals
including two shorthanded.
Sophomore
goalie Kevin Woods (Setauket, NY) kept a shut out going until deep
into the third period when Ryan Chandler (Woodbridge, VA) finally
put Pfeiffer on the board. Woods (1-1) picked up the win allowing
three goals while making 13 saves in 54 minutes. Brian Plamer (Wooster,
Ohio) picked up the loss in his first game of the season.
Pat Fitzgerald
(Baltimore, MD) had a game-high four goals on seven shots and Kyle
Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) scored three goals, one assist,
snatched eight ground balls and went 5-for-7 on face offs. Kohl Smith
(Wilmington, NC) was perfect on face off, 6-for-6, while Kris Hartzell
grabbed a game high 10 ground balls.
Head coach
John Brubaker was pleased with the teams performance stating, “its
great to get the momentum rolling with another Deep South victory
by playing a full hard game after Wednesday’s performance (a
16-6 loss to NYIT). The third midfield line stepped up for us, led
by Ray Gayhardt.”
“We
have a young team with a lot of valuable players,” concluded
Brubaker, which should make the rest of the season exciting.
The Knights
will host Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) out of Belmont, California
on March 1st at 3:00 p.m. The Falcons entertain St. Vincent University
on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

Knights
Lacrosse Falls to Defending National Champs

18, 2004
PALM
COAST, FL—Senior Sean Meagher
scored a game high four goals and added an assist as New York
Institute of Technology defeated St. Andrews Presbyterian College
16-6 in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at
neutral Palm Coast High School.
Pre-season
all American Jimmy Herberson (Oakland Mills, Maryland) scored his
first goal of the season at the 5:08 mark in the first quarter giving
the Knights an early 1-0 lead. The Bears tied the game at 1-1 going
into the second quarter. Senior Sean Juresic tallied his first goal
of the season on the man advantage with 12:35 left in the second,
providing St. Andrews with their last lead of the game.
NYIT, who
are the defending division II national champions, responded by scoring
six of the next seven goals. Herberson recorded his second goal of
the game during that stretch. The Knights pulled to within three,
7-4, at the 3:02 mark in the second as Juresic scored his second
of the game.
The Bears
(1-0) then pulled away scoring the next eight goals and coasting
to the 10-goal victory.
Brian Boyle
and Paul Montali each added two goals and two assists for NYIT and
Tom Zummo and Matt Miller scored twice and dished out an assist.
Anthony Letterel (1-0) made eight saves in the net for the Bears.
Sophomore
goalie Kevin Woods (Setauket, NY), who fell to 0-1, kept the Knights
in the game early recording 16 of his 23 saves in the first half.
Sophomore Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) tallied two late
goals for St. Andrews pulling his team high goal total to seven.
The Knights
(1-1) will resume their Deep South Conference play on Saturday afternoon
at 1:00 p.m. as they host Pfeiffer University.

Weiher Named DSC Player of the Week

ROCK
HILL, SC—St. Andrews Presbyterian
College sophomore midfielder Kyle Weiher has been named the Deep
South Lacrosse Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Weiher
helped spark St. Andrews to a season opening 14-6 victory over Lees-McRae
on Saturday. Weiher scored five even strength goals on five shots
against the DSC rival. The St. Albert, Alberta, Canada native also
won 7 out of 10 face offs and collected six ground balls. The Knights
are 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the DSC due in part to Weiher’s
play.

Coast Past Lees-McRae, 14-6, In Season Opener
February
14, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian
College men’s lacrosse team started its 2004 season off
with a solid home win over Deep South Conference rival Lees-McRae,
14-6, on very rainy Saturday afternoon.
Madison
Thompson (Durham, North Carolina) finished off a Jason Walker (Columbia,
Maryland) pass on the power play for the Bobcats with 7:52 left in
the second quarter to tie the game at 5-5.
That would
be the last goal LMC would see for a while as the Knights went on
to score the next nine goals including the game winner by Pat Fitzgerald
(Baltimore, Maryland) at 5:45 in the second period.
Fitzgerald
finished with three goals including two on the man advantage. Sophomore
midfielder Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) sparked St.
Andrews momentum with five even strength goals on five shots. Freshman
Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Maryland) chipped in with four assists including
one on the game winner to Fitzgerald. Kris Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta,
Canada) had game high 13 ground balls.
Lees-McRae
was led by Josh Spriggs’ (Downingtown, Pennsylvania) two goals
on two shots.
Junior
Chris Sherman (Bel Air, Maryland) picked up his first win in net
for the Knights after making six saves in 54 minutes while Chris
Fielder, who is also from Bel Air, took the loss.
St. Andrews
will play the New York Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon
at 3:00 p.m. The match will be played at the Palm Coast High School
in Florida. Lees-McRae hosts Briar Cliff next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Roughnecks
Select SAPC Alumni Peter Gut in NLL Entry Draft

The
Calgary Roughnecks drafted St. Andrews Presbyterian College alumni
Peter Gut in the 2003 National Lacrosse League (NLL) entry draft.
Gut, a 2003 SAPC graduate, was selected as the first pick in the
sixth round of the draft (54th overall).
Gut
will be playing with another St. Andrews lacrosse alumni, Brad MacArthur.
Gut and MacArthur are the only two former SAPC student athletes in
the NLL. MacArthur was a first-round (fifth overall) pick in the ’99
NLL draft.
As
a defender for the Knights in ‘03, Gut lead the team with 70
ground balls while tallying one goal and one assist.
Peter
built up a big resume at St. Andrews including Verizon Academic All-
American (2003), STX-USILA Academic All-American (2003), 2nd team
All-Conference (2001), 1st team All-Conference (02 and 03), Deep
South Conference tournament team (01, 02, and 03), USILA All-American
(02 and 03), and 2002 NCAA Final Four Participant
Gut
and MacArthur had similar amateur careers. Both were Canadian Junior
National team players, two time All-Americans at St Andrews, Academic
All-Americans at St Andrews, and First Team All-Conference (Deep
