Ponte Vedra Beach, FL- It was an early morning for the men of St. Andrews Golf as they were up with the sun in order to tee-off at 8:30 AM for day two of the Queens Invitational. After a long, two-round day on Monday, SAU got some much needed sleep and arrived at the beautiful TPC Sawgrass ready to take on the greens. Hanging with the other teams, St. Andrews played with precision and pulled out a 7th place finish at the two-day, 54-hole event.

St. Andrews and 11 other institutions attended the Queens Invitational, which was held in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, at the TPC Sawgrass: Valley Course. Teams that participated in the event include (in order of finish) Nova Southeastern University, Barry University, Abilene Christian University, Barton College, Queens University of Charlotte, Flagler College, St. Andrews University, Eckerd College, Erskine College, Mount Olive College, St. Thomas Aquinas, and North Georgia.

Taking first place as a team, Nova Southeastern University finished +30. Nine strokes behind NSU, Barry University shot +39 on the 6,848 yard course and landed in second; with Abilene Christian University a mere five strokes behind to pull a third place finish.

Greg Mergel of Flagler College managed to finish the Invitational at an even 216, giving him the first place title. Nova Southeastern’s Ben Taylor trailed Mergel by one stroke as he came in second with a final score of 217. Carding a 219, Ricardo Celia of Nova Southeastern and Trey Sullivan of Abilene Christian tied for the third place spot. Other top ten finishers included Kyle Davis of Queens University (5th), SAU’s own Matt Latham (T6), and Daniel Claytor of Barton College (9th).

The Par 72 course forced SAU to focus and make every shot count, which is exactly what junior Matt Latham (Exmouth, Devon, England) did. Latham showed phenomenal skill over the past two days as he finished in seventh place individually and ended the three-round event at +5. With a score of 75-73-73/221, Latham tied for 6th place with Scott Smyers of Barry University. "It was a struggle and at times I showed moments of brilliance. There was a premium on hitting the ball in the fairway so it's a great surprise that I put three decent rounds together,” says Latham on his play at the Queens Invitational.

Tegernbach, Germany, native Severin Kolmeder took the second place (19 th overall) finish for the Knights when he carded a final score of 232 (76-74-82). Trailing Kolmeder by one stroke, Carl Rudhag (Gothenburg, Sweden) finished in a three-way tie for 21st by shooting 75-81-77/233.

Paul Eastwood (Belfast, Ireland) worked to play his hardest, despite windy conditions, and carded 86-83-87/256. Grabbing the fifth place finish for SAU was freshman Hunter McPhillips. The Temple Terrace, FL, native improved his play on day two and finished with a final score of 265 (85-92-88).

"The guys were in grind mode all day. With wind gusts up to 30 knots, I'll be surprised if they stay awake for the ride home! The rounds were truly a reflection of the difficulty,” says Head Coach Lisa Becka.

The Queens Invitational marks the end of the fall season for golf at St. Andrews. Keep up with the Knights on the University’s athletics website and be on the lookout for the spring golf schedule.
