Final Round

Sunset Beach, NC-
With an eighth place team finish St. Andrews University junior Matt Latham (68-73/141) finished 3-under on Tuesday to finish fourth in the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate hosted by Lenoir Rhyne University and Lincoln Memorial University at the Sea Trail Resort.

The 6,761-yard Jones course treated Wingate University (284-288/572) well as they cruised to a victory over Belmont Abbey College (289-291/580) who finished second. Lincoln Memorial University’s Eric Kennedy (71-68) defeated Wingate’s Brian Denton (70-69) in a playoff with both players carding a two-day total of 139. Crusader’s Adam Hedges finished in third place just one shot behind the winner.

St Andrews favorite Swede Carl Rudhag (72-72/144) carded two level par rounds to finish in ninth place, while German Severin Kolmeder shot 75-72/147 to finish in the Top 20. Canadian Andrew Primeau bounced back with a 3-over par round (80-75/155) today. Teammate Richard Caisley scored 82-79/161 to round out the Knight’s scoring. Matt DeGiorgio (73-87/160) competed as an individual in the event.

Coach Becka commented, “I am inspired by their tenacity as a team and Latham as a team leader. He knows how to keep the mood positive and focused. His influence is noticed by other coaches and I’m certain it’s only a matter of time until he gets into the winner’s seat.” Becka continued, “As Simon Cowell would say, Latham’s got the X-Factor!”

The St. Andrews women’s team placed 21 st with a two-day total of 851. Sadiyya Gillespie shot 85-83/168, Morgan Clay 89-102/191, Dara Legard 112-125/237 and Christina Agosto 121-134/255 for the Knights. Agosto’s spirits were dampened by six back-to-back balls finding their watery grave on the par-3 sixth hole. The three group back up on the tee box may not have helped her game, but her teammate were present for moral support. “We’ve all been there. Anybody that’s played this game knows all too well the challenges it presents,” commented fifth year Coach Lisa Becka. “I’m just glad to know that when the going gets tough, I’ve got a group of gals that support each other!”

Winning the women’s division was UNC Pembroke led by medalist Dana Watkins with a two-day total of 148 (77-71). Teammate Meghan Moore (75-75/150) and Tusculum’s Emee Herbert (73-77/150) finished tied for second place.

The Knight’s next appearance will be at NSU Shark Invitational played at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on October 10 th and 11 th for the men while the women will play at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, NC on October 17 th & 18 th.
