Goldsboro, NC – The Barton College men’s golf team played the final hole 2-under par on Tuesday to rally past Conference Carolinas rival Belmont Abbey to claim the CenturyLink Collegiate Invitational title.

While the Bulldogs were going two under on the final par-4, 445-yard No. 9 layout (the men started on the 10 th hole), the Crusaders came in at 4-over on the last hole, allowing Barton to seize the title. Barton finished at 290-302-592 while Abbey posted 291-305-596. Scores were higher on Tuesday since players played for more than four hours in the rain.

Junior All-American Daniel Claytor ( Rocky Mount, N.C.) captured his third career medalist award for Barton by firing 67-74-141 (3-under), edging Belmont Abbey junior Adam Hedges (72-71-143) by two strokes. Hedges carded the only under-par round on the day among 53 golfers. He and Claytor went toe-to-toe down the stretch in the final grouping. Mount Olive’s Kyle Ham, also in the last threesome, put himself in contention for the individual title by birdieing his first three holes on the back nine, but followed that streak with three straight bogeys.

On the final three holes, knowing the individual title was in the balance, Claytor sank a 16-foot eagle putt, only to have Hedges make birdie after chipping from the fringe. On the 8 th hole (their 17 th), a 210-yard par 3, Hedges hit a brilliant iron shot to 15 feet beyond the pin while Claytor found the rain-soaked greenside bunker. Claytor blasted out to two feet and saved par, but Hedges rolled in a birdie. Claytor and Hedges both hit to the front of the ninth green, where Claytor two-putted for par and Hedges made bogey.

Barton sophomore Nicolas Fonseca ( Bogota, Colombia) grabbed the third individual spot with a scintillating finish. He saved par on his 16 th hole after hitting his approach in a water hazard, bogeyed his 17 th hole and then nearly eagled the final layout, eliciting a roar from the spectators as his uphill approach shot rolled over the cup. He tapped in for birdie to finish in solo third at 72-74-146.

Mount Olive ’s Ham (72-75) and Barton B’s Micah Lawrence (73-74) deadlocked for fourth at 3-over 147. Carl Rudhag (73-75) and Matthew Latham (75-73) of St. Andrews and Mount Olive’s Kyle Simpson (73-75) tied for sixth at 6-over 148 and Cape Fear Community College’s Ryan Parrish (73-77) and Wake Tech’s Wes Strader rounded out the top 10 at 150.

Mount Olive, co-host of the event alongside Barton, placed third as a team with a 300-306-606, four better than St. Andrews (301-309-610). Cape Fear (300-313) and Barton B (304-309) tied for fifth at 613, Wake Tech was seventh at 305-325-630 and St. Andrews B took eighth at 316-315-631. Louisburg (323-328-651) and Johnston Community College (315-350-665) rounded out the 10-team men’s field.

Severin Kolmeder (74-79/153) finished tied for fifteenth while Andrew Primeau (79-82/161) and Richard Caisley (79-82/161) fired identical two day rounds to wind up tied for thirty-fourth. The St. Andrews B-team finished in eighth place with scores of 316-315/631 led by Scotsman Greg Paterson (77-77/154) and Canadian Riley Butcher (76-78/154). Hunter McPhillips (81-80/161), Matt DeGiorgio (85-80/165) and Paul Eastwood (82-84/166) completed the Knights scoring. Individual Ben Martinez (85-85/170) finished in a tie for forty-eighth place.

The Knight’s golf teams will make their next appearance at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate co-hosted by Lenoir Rhyne and Lincoln Memorial University on the Byrd and courses at the Sea Trail in Sunset Beach, North Carolina on October 3-4, 2011.
