Prosperity, SC – Temperatures dipped into the low 60’s at the Mid Carolina Club in Prosperity, SC for the 2011 Honda of Columbia Fall Classic hosted by Newberry College. The thirty six-hole event was led by Wingate University after first round play with a team score of ten over par (294). Individual and first round leader Jordan Walor fired a one under par 70 to lead the 79 player field into the afternoon rounds. St. Andrews freshmen Severin Kolmeder of Tegernbach, Germany entered his afternoon round in a tie for third place just two shots behind the Braves leader and one shot back of Cape Fear’s David Donovan.

The afternoon proved to be just as challenging as the morning round with only 10 rounds carded under par for the tournament. Winning the event and maintaining their first round lead, Wingate University (294-285/579) edged out Tusculum College (297-287/584) by 5 strokes. UNC Pembroke’s Jordan Walor (70-71/141) was the only player to finish under par winning the tournament by one stroke over Tusculum’s David Talley (73-69/142) and Newberry’s Matthew Campbell (73-69/142). Leading the Knights scoring was German Severin Kolmeder (72-79/151) who finished tied for 23 rd followed closely by Carl Rudhag of Sweden (77-75/152) who finished tied for 29 th. Rounding out St. Andrew’s scoring was Englishman Matthew Latham (76-78/154), Canadian Andrew Primeau (77-77/154) and Irishman Paul Eastwood (96-83/179).

Low round for the remaining Knights participants was carded by Florida native Hunter McPhillips (78-86/164). Additional St. Andrews scorers included Scotsman Greg Paterson (83-79/162), Englishman Rich Caisley (82-83/165), David Kostyal of Wilmington, (81-88/169), Maryland native Ben Martinez (86-83/169), Matt DeGiorgio of Massachusetts (83-87/170) and Canadian Riley Butcher (87-85/172).

Lending a helping hand was Head PGA Professional Lee Duncan’s staff. St. Andrews pulled into the club at 7:02PM in the evening after a full day of classes and a 3 hour van ride. With not enough time for a practice round the young team comprised of nine freshmen jumped on carts and raced around the golf course to catch a glimpse of any areas that might be troublesome.

“We couldn’t have prepared for the event without them,” exclaimed Coach Lisa Becka as she commented on the help of cart attendant Patrick and Mid Carolina staff member Randy Waddell. “They saved us. We couldn’t see anything. It was pitch black!” The Mid Carolina staff helped the men’s team by shining their truck lights on the greens so that the team could locate the pin placements and note the subtle breaks in the greens. “They thought we were lost when they came looking for us on the course, but we were actually using the light from our cell phones to get our pre-tournament work finished,” remarked fifth year head Coach Becka. “We couldn’t thank them enough and they couldn’t have been any more accommodating or courteous. This is exactly the type of experience that a student-athlete will remember. It’s about the people, the relationships and the experience!”

The Knight’s golf teams will make their next appearance at the Century Link Invitational co-hosted by Barton and Mount Olive Colleges at the Lane Tree Golf Club in Goldsboro, North Carolina on September 19-20, 2011.
