St. Andrews Struggles in the Wind to Finish 12th

September 6, 2011
By: Lisa Becka, Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach

Final Results

Kiawah Island , SC — St. Andrews had a more difficult day out on the course in the final round of the Kiawah Island Invitational at Cougar Point. Lightning delayed play in the early morning and high winds followed, making scoring conditions harder. The teams spirits were not dampened by the weather and all were eager to have a successful day.

Leading scoring for the Knights was team captain and englishman Matthew Latham (71-78/149), follwed by freshman Carl Rudhag of Sweden (70-80/150). Irishman Paul Eastwood shot two rounds of 82 for a two day total of 164. Rounding out St. Andrews scoring was German Severin Kolmeder (74-85/159) and Canadian Andrew Primeau (79-91/170).

With a two day total of 585 Georgia Southwestern won the tournament by three shots over tournament host USC Aiken (293-295/588). USC Aiken’s Taylor Welborn won medalist honors with a score of 139 over Jp Griffin who shot 140. Finishing in a three way tie for third place, with a total of 143 was Barton's Dermot McElhennon, Carson-Newman's Liam Ashby and North Georgia's Howard Duffin.

Coach Becka was encouraged by the attitudes of her team, "I was pleased with the fact that no-one gave up and everyone continued to fight for each stroke. With wind gusts exceeding 35mph and tornado warnings issued for the area, I truly felt that the tournament provided a learning opportunity for each player to identify areas of their games that need improvement". Latham urged, "I turned at one over par and fought all day. It was a frustrating test of golf that certainly challenged me mentally".

Next up for the Men's and Women's Knights golfers is a trip to the Lane Tree Golf Club in Goldsboro, North Carolina for the Century Link Invitational hosted by Barton College on September 19th and 20th.
