St. Andrews places eighth at Conference Championships April 22, 2008 CLEMMONS, N.C.—Senior Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) finished in 16th place to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s golf team to an eighth place finish in the 2008 Conference Carolinas Championships at Salem Glen Golf & Country Club. At the beginning of the tournament, Kristinsson was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention list. Kristinsson shot rounds of 71, 73, and 80 on the 6,726-yard, par-71 layout to pace the five Knights golfers. Kristinsson’s 11-over par total of 224 was good for 16th place out of 50 participants. St. Andrews surprised the field with an opening 296 on Sunday to stake partial claim to a three-way tie for first place after the first of three rounds. However, the Knights struggled a little bit on Monday and Tuesday falling to eighth place out of 10 teams with a three-day total of 927. Nationally ranked Belmont Abbey won the tournament with 879 strokes, narrowly defeating defending champions Barton College by two strokes. Kristinsson was selected to the Conference Carolinas All-Conference Honorable Mention list after boasting a team-best stroke average of 76.5. Kristinsson carded rounds in the 70’s 11 of the 15 times he hit the links in competitive rounds this year. Kristinsson also had six top-20 finishes. Sophomore Scott Bennett (Laurinburg, N.C.) was the next best Knights golfer at the conference tourney with a 54-hole total of 77-80-76—233 (+20). Freshman Jack McClelland (Guilford, Surrey, England) was one stroke behind Bennett with a three-day scorecard of 76-81-77—234. Junior Dwight Meeker (Clermont, Fla.) followed by signing scorecards of 72-83-86—241 and freshman Rafael Garcia (Puebla, Mexica) rounded out the Knights scoring with a total of 78-80-84—242. |
