VASS, N.C.—Coker College rallied from a five-stroke overnight deficit by shooting the only sub-300 18-hole total on Tuesday to win the team title at the 2008 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at Woodlake Resort & Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4. Senior Ian Milne of Fayetteville State University won the individual medalist title by shooting two-day total of one-under par 143.

Coker trailed Fayetteville State by five strokes heading into the final round but the Cobras shot an impressive eight-over 296 in Tuesday’s wet and windy conditions to edge the Broncos by one stroke. Coker takes home the first place trophy with a total of 313-296—609 while Fayetteville State takes home the runner-up hardware with a 308-302—610.

Milne held a three-stroke lead after Monday’s opening round with an even par 72 on the 6,954-yard, par-72 Maples Layout at the Woodlake Resort. Milne increased his final margin of victory to four strokes by firing the only round under par out of 94 total scorecards turned in by the men. Milne’s 71 in the final round gave him a 36-hole total of 143.

Alexis Anghert (Laval) was the individual runner-up with a 75-72—147. Montreal’s Philippe A Bannon (75-75—150) and St. Andrews’ Jack McClelland (78-72—150) tied for third.

Coker was led by Christopher March and Stephen Thomson, who tied for fifth with matching 80-72—152’s. Teammates Jay Goldenberg (76-77—153) and Jimmy Gillam (79-75—154) followed in seventh and tied for eighth place, respectively.

Montreal’s Hugo Lauzon (77-77-154) and Laval individual Steeven Hovington (82-72—154) tied Gillam for eighth to round out the top-10 individuals.

The University of Montreal took third place honors with a team total of 613 while fellow Canadian school Laval University garnered fourth, 620.

Host St. Andrews Presbyterian College was sitting in second position with an opening 310 but fell to fifth overall with a 312 on Tuesday and a total of 622. Freshman Jack McClelland (Guildford, Surrey, England) bounced back from an open 78 with an even par 72 to finish tied for third. McClelland’s two-day total of 150 was six strokes better than junior Dwight Meeker (Clermont, Fla.) and senior Alfred Kristinsson’s (Reykjavik, Iceland) totals of 156. Meeker was tied for second place after an opening 75 but fell back to tied for 12th with an 81. Kristinsson tied Bennett by signing scorecards of 79 and 77. Sophomore Scott Bennett (Laurinburg, N.C.) followed with a 78-82—160 while sophomore Thordur Gussurarson (Reykjavik, Iceland) rounded out the Knights team scoring with an 81-84—165.

St. Andrews had two golfers compete as individuals. Freshman Rafael Garcia (Puebla, Mexico) turned in a 80-81—161 while classmate Joshua McGuire (Houlton, Maine) added an 85-79—164.

Pitt Community College (654), Kentucky State University (757) and Chowan University (764) rounded out the field of eight teams in sixth to eighth place, respectively.

The St. Andrews men’s golf team next competes in the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate hosted by UNC Pembroke on Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6 at the Carolina Sands Golf Club in Elizabethtown, North Carolina.
