SAPC men's golf places fifth at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn.—Sophomore Scott Bennett (Laurinburg, N.C.) and senior Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) both shot two-day totals of four-over par 146 to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s golf team to a fifth place finish out of 10 teams at the Tusculum Fall Classic at the Link Hills Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Knights, who have steadily improved in each of their three fall tournaments, posted a season-low team total of 590. SAPC broke the 300-stroke barrier on both days this week for the first time this year with 18-hole team scores of 297 on Monday and 293 on Tuesday. The Knights finished ahead of five teams and just eight shots away from third place.

Kristinsson shot the Knights first red number this season during the opening round by firing a one-under 70 on the 6,763-yard, par-71 Link Hills Country Club layout. Kristinsson backed up his impressive day with a 76 in the final round.

Bennett carded his first two rounds in the 70’s of the season this week by following an opening 74 with a 72.

Kristinsson and Bennett tied for 15th out of 58 golfers with 36-hole totals of 146.

Freshman Jack McClelland (Guilford, Surrey, England) finished just one stroke behind the Knights leaders by signing scorecards of 75 and 72. McClelland, who tied Bennett for the team’s low round on Tuesday, placed tied for 19th with his 147 total.

Sophomore Thordur Gussurarson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and freshman Rafael Garcia (Puebla, Mexico) turned in two-day totals of 153 and 154, respectively, for SAPC. Gussurarson bounced back from an 80 with a season-best 73 and Garcia had a pair of rounds in the 70’s with a 78 and a 76.

The St. Andrews men’s golfers conclude the fall portion of their schedule on Saturday and Sunday, October 20-21 when they compete in the Tot Hill Farm Invitational (hosted by Pfeiffer University) in Asheboro, N.C.
