CLAYTON, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s golf team improved by eight strokes on Tuesday afternoon to finish in 11th place at The Dogfight at The Neuse in the squads first 36-hole tournament of the 2007/08 season. The SAPC ‘B’ team also competed in the tournament finishing in 13th place.
Junior Dwight Meeker (Clermont, Fla.) shot the low round for the Knights top team on Tuesday, firing a four-over par 76 on the 6,920-yard, par-72 Neuse layout. Meeker opened the tourney with 83 for a two-day total of 159.
Sophomore Thordur Gissurarson (Reykjavik, Iceland) was St. Andrews top finisher as the only Knight to turn in a scorecard in the 70’s on the first day. Gissurarson backed up his opening 77 with a 78 in the final round to finish with an 11-over total of 155. Gissurarson finished in a tie for 26th place out of 74 golfers.
Freshman Jack McClelland (Guildford, Surrey, England) tied Meeker for 41st place signing cards of 81 and 78. Sophomore Scott Bennett’s (Laurinburg, N.C.) 85-83—168 and senior Alfred Kristinsson’s (Reykjavik, Iceland) 82-89—171 rounded out the Knights scoring.
On the St. Andrews ‘B’ team, freshman Rafael Garcia (Puebla, Mexico) shot the low 18-hole score for any SAPC golfer with a three-over 75 on Tuesday. Garcia rebounded from an open 89 to finish tied for 50th with a total of 164.
The Knights second squad only had four players, all of which were playing in their first collegiate tournament for St. Andrews. Freshman Matt Neal (Napanee, Ontario, Canada) turned in a 85-82—167; freshman Joshua McGuire (Houlton, Maine) signed a 90-80—170, and senior Martin Kreshon (Charlotte, N.C.) added a 97-96—193.
St. Andrews will next compete in the Jack Shadwick Invitational (hosted by Southern Wesleyan University) on the Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca, N.C. on Monday and Tuesday, September 24-25.
