HARTSVILLE, SC—With a strong fourth place finish out of 10 teams at the 2006 CVAC Men’s Golf Championships at the Hartsville Country Club (hosted by Coker College), St. Andrews Presbyterian College has qualified for NCAA Division II Atlantic/Southeast Regional for the third consecutive year.
St. Andrews posted 18-hole scores of 301, 301 and 306 to finish the 54-hole event with a team score of 908. The Knights finished ahead of CVAC rivals Barton (911), Limestone (917), Queens (928), Mount Olive (928), Anderson (934) and Lees-McRae (970).
Junior John Kolls (Durham, NC) led the Knights charge with a 13th place finish out of 50 golfers. Kolls posted rounds of 73, 73, and 76 on the 6,615-yard, par-72 Hartsville Country Club layout for a 222 total. Kolls finished nine-strokes back of tournament medalist Dion Sirrianni (Lees-McRae).
Senior Nathan Young (Kewanee, IL) turned in consistent rounds of 76, 76, and 75 for a 227 total and a tied for 18th place finish. Freshman Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) followed three-shots behind Young after making a charge in the final round. After carding a 79 and 78, Kristinsson led the Knights in the final round with a 73.
Senior Graham Bell (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) had a 77-74-82=233 while junior Alvin Yeung (Markham, Ontario, Canada) finished with a 75-80-83=238.
Host Coker College (864) won the team title by 15 strokes over Belmont Abbey College (879). Pfeiffer University (882) rounded out the top-three spots.
The Knights, who finished fourth in 2004 and seventh in 2005 in the Atlantic regional, will be looking to use this week’s results as a springboard to possibly their best finish in the eight-team regional. The 2006 Atlantic/Southeast Regional will take place at the Rocky River Golf Club in Concord, NC, on May 1-3 (hosted by Pfeiffer University).
