VASS, NC—The St. Andrews men’s golf team finished fifth out of 13 teams in the shortened 2006 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at the Maples Course of the Woodlake Country Club with a 316 total on Monday.
Abilene Christian University and Mount Olive College each shot a 10-over par 298 on a cool and damp Monday to share the overnight lead in the SAPC Spring Invite. ACU, who finished second in the tournament last year, was declared tournament champions after Tuesday’s round was washed out because of a lower fifth man score than MOC.
The Trojan duo of Mick Moberg and Chris Bitzenhofer shot the only two rounds under par on the 6,791-yard, par-72 Maples layout to lead Mount Olive to a 298 total. Moberg, who shot a two-under 70, took the medalist honors from his teammate by one shot.
The Wildcats received consistent scorecards from its top-four players, who are all within five strokes of the lead, to tie MOC for the lead at 298. Patrick Hanauer and Curtis Harris lead ACU with rounds of 74.
Lincoln Memorial’s Jeremy Gordon finished in sole possession of third place in the 69-player field with an even-par round of 72.
Concord University leads a group of five schools that are within 11 shots of each other for third place with an opening 311, which is a 13 stroke deficit behind the leaders. The University of Findley (314), St. Andrews (316), Anderson (321), and Lincoln Memorial (322) will all be jockeying for position during Tuesday’s final round. Rounding out eighth to 13th place are Lees-McRae (330), NC Central (335), St. Andrews B (345), Pikeville (355), Chowan (418) and St. Augustine’s (422).
Senior Graham Bell (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) and junior Alvin Yeung (Markham, Ontario, Canada) led host St. Andrews with five-over 76’s. Sophomore John Kolls (Durham, NC) and freshman Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) rounded out the Knights ‘A’ Team scoring with an 80 and 84, respectively.
Junior Cory Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) led the ‘B’ squad with an 81. Senior Rebel Kennedy (Sundridge, Ontario, Canada) posted an 85; freshman Dwight Meeker (Ocoee, FL) scorecard read 89; freshman Chaz McDougald (Angier, NC) followed at 90; and sophomore Chas Lindemann (Erlanger, KY) finished with a 91.
Knights individuals senior Peter Galan (Ontario, NY) and junior Benjamin Morrissey (Urbandale, IA) both turned in rounds of 94.
St. Andrews will next play in t he BMW Collegiate hosted by North Greenville College at the Verdae Greens Golf Club in Greenville, SC, on Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4.
