WILSON, NC—St. Andrews improved its team total by five strokes on Tuesday and leapfrogged two colleges to finish fourth out of 10 teams at the 30th annual Lee Nissan-Barton College Intercollegiate at the Wilson Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Knights carded rounds of 312 and 307 for a 619 total at the 36-hole event to finish fourth. Nationally ranked Pfeiffer University won the tournament by 19 strokes with a two-day total of 588. Washington & Lee and host Barton finished second and third with scores of 607 and 614, respectively.
Senior leftie Graham Bell (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) led the Knights charge with a seven-over 151 total. After opening with a six-over 78 on the 6,851-yard, par-72 layout; Bell fired a team-best one-over 73 on Tuesday to finish 12th out of 59 players.
The next three Knights golfers all finished in a tie for 25th place after posting 36-hole totals of 157. Junior Alvin Yeung (Markham, Ontario, Canada) and freshman Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) both turned scorecards of 77 and 80 while senior Nathan Young ( Kewanee, IL) followed an opening 80 with a 77. Junior John Kolls (Durham, NC) bounced back from an 81 with a 77 on Tuesday.
Bell led SAPC with five birdies while both Yeung and Young both carded an eagle.
Falcon Ian Kenwright won the medalist honors by eight strokes with back-to-back rounds under par of 69 and 71. Pfeiffer’s Eric Forsman and Jeff Hill along with NC State’s Garry Hill all finished in a three-way tie for second with four-over 148’s.
St. Andrews will host the 2006 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at the Woodlake Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday, March 20-21.
