Knights golfers compete in Miami, Florida

MIAMI, FL —The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s golf team took advantage of ‘Spring Break’ and headed south for the Buccaneer Invitational (hosted by Barry University) at the Westview Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Knights finished the 54-tournament in 14th place out of 15 teams in a very strong field that consisted of 11 teams that are currently ranked in the top-32 of NCAA Division II.

St. Andrews improved its score in each of its three rounds. The Knights backed up an opening 308 on Monday with a 307 later that day. SAPC concluded play with a 305 on Tuesday for a three-round total of 920.

No. 5 nationally ranked Lynn University (286-285-299) won the team title with a total of 870, twelve strokes ahead of No. 4 West Florida’s (292-294-296) 882 total.

Junior Alvin Yeung (Markham, Ontario, Canada) was the low individual St. Andrews player after firing rounds of 77, 75, and 75 on the 6,790-yard, par-72 layout. Yeung’s 227 total was good for a 36th place finish out of 84 golfers.

Sophomore John Kolls (Durham, NC) tied for the Knights low round of the tournament with an opening, even-par 72. Kolls posted rounds of 75 and 82 afterwards to finish 47th with a 229.

Senior Nathan Young (Kewanee, IL) turned in three rounds in the 70’s (79-77-76) for a 232 total. Freshman Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) rallied from an 81 and 80 on Monday with an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish one stroke behind Young. Senior Graham Bell (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) completed St. Andrews play with scores of 80, 82, and 83.

Hoyt McGarity of Lynn University won the medalist honors by one stroke with a three-under 213 total and three consistent rounds of 71, 70, and 72.

The Knights will team compete in the 2006 Lee Nissan/Barton College Intercollegiate at the Wilson Country Club in Wilson, NC, on Monday and Tuesday, March 13-14.
