CLAYTON , NC—Senior Graham Bell (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) led the St. Andrews golf team to an 11-stroke improvement in Tuesday’s final round of the ‘Dogfight at the Neuse’ tournament hosted by Barton College at the Neuse Golf Club with a one-under 71.
The Knights opened the tournament with a disappointing 316 on Monday with only senior Nathan Young (Kewanee, IL) shooting in the 70’s, firing a two-over 74 on the 6,920-yard, par-72 layout.
St. Andrews rebounded on Tuesday with all four scoring rounds in the 70’s to shoot a 305. The Knights 621 total was good for ninth place out of 11 teams.
North Carolina State’s JV team won the tournament with a 579 total, two strokes ahead of runner-up Carson Newman.
Jace Strandberg (NCSU JV) won the medalist honors by defeating Tyler Dingman (Cape Fear) in a playoff. Both Strandberg and Dingman turned in two-under totals of 142.
Bell bounced back from an opening 80 with a 71 to finish in a tie for 20th. Young finished just behind Bell carding a 152.
Freshmen Dwight Meeker (Ocoee, FL) and Todd Miller (Charlottesville, VA) tied each other with 159 strokes apiece. Senior Peter Galan (Ontario, NY), who played as an individual had the biggest improvement on Tuesday with a 79 to finish with two-day total of 169. Freshman Chas McDougald (Angier, NC) finished the Knights scoring at 170.
The St. Andrews men’s golf team finishes its fall season at the Charlotte Shootout (hosted by Pfeiffer University) on October 17-18. The tournament is played at the Rocky River Golf Club.
