Kolls dominates Knights home golf tournament

WAGRAM , NC—Junior John Kolls five-stroke victory was not enough for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to hold off Mount Olive for the men’s team title at the Third Annual St. Andrews Fall Invitational at the Deercroft Golf & Country Club. The Trojans won by five carding a two-day total of 606. Limestone College won the women’s tournament by one stroke over USC Upstate.

Men

Kolls dominated the men’s tournament as the only player in the 33-entrant field to shoot two rounds under par on the 6,573-yard, par-72 Deecroft layout. Kolls backed up an opening 68 with a 71 to win the tournament by five strokes. Kolls recorded 22 par’s, eight birdies, and an eagle in route to the medalist honors.

Fayetteville State’s Derek Scott finished second with a 36-hole total of 144 after firing the low round of the tournament on Tuesday, a five-under 67. Mount Olive’s Brandon Barfield rounded out the top-3 with a 149.

Mount Olive (606) jumped ahead of defending champ and overnight leaders St. Andrews with a 307 on Tuesday to win the team title by five. The Knights (611) followed the tournaments best 298 with a 313 to finish in second.

Rounding out third to sixth were Limestone (627), Lincoln Memorial (630), Fayetteville State (631) and Chowan (685).

KNIGHTS SCORES: Graham Bell and Alfred Kristinsson tied for 14th shooting 157’s; Rebel Kennedy carded a 161; Chaz McDougald posted a 162; Dwight Meeker followed with a 165; while Peter Galan and Todd Miller turned in 166’s.

Women

Trish Randall (USC Upstate) won the women’s individual title by six shots with a two-day total of 157 on 5,829-yard, par-72 layout. Randall’s 77 on Monday was the only round in the 70’s in the 29-player tournament. Randall almost accomplished it again in the final round firing an 80.

Limestone won the team title by one stroke over USC Upstate on the strength of a runner-up finish by Jen McLean (163) and a third place finish by Katie Clayton (164).

The Saints won by shooting a 681 while the Spartans followed one stroke behind with a 682 total. Mount Olive rounded out the top-3 with a 708 while St. Andrews moved up to fourth with a 377. Belmont Abbey and Lincoln Memorial rounded out six-team field with 745 and 755 totals, respectively.

KNIGHTS SCORES: Heather Pothier finished fourth with a 165; Andrea Johston tied for seventh with a 172; Tara Laird carded a 197; and Sally McDaniel shot a 208.
