BADIIN LAKE , NC—Tuesday’s third round of the Johnny Palmer Invitational was the only round that the St. Andrews men’s golf team carded all four scoring rounds in the 70’s, moving the Knights up to 13th out of 18 teams in the 54-hole tournament at the 7,102-yard, par-72 Old North State Club.
Host Pfeiffer University changed the tournament format from 36 to 54 holes in 2005, with every team playing two rounds on Monday. The Knights put themselves out of contention and into 15th place after the long first day shooting rounds of 318 and 309.
However, the Knights bounced back with its season best round of 299 (+11) to move up two spots in the standings with a team total of 926.
The Falcons (881) served as greedy hosts, winning the tournament by 14 stokes after firing a seven-under par 281 on Tuesday. USC Upstate and Lenoir-Rhyne tied for second with 895 totals.
Junior John Kolls (Durham, NC) was the only Knights to post three rounds in the 70’s. Kolls finished in a tie for 27th with an 11-over, 227 (78-72-77).
Senior Graham Bell (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) followed Kolls in a T-44 with an 80-77-75-232. Senior Nathan Young (Kewanee, IL) finished one stroke behind Bell coming back with an even par 72 on Tuesday after opening with rounds of 82 and 79.
Freshman Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjvik, Iceland) and junior Alvin Yeung ( Markham, Ontario, Canada) completed St. Andrews’ scoring with 238 and 246 totals, respectively.
Ryan Heisey, from Division I UNC Greensboro, won the individual medalist honors with a four-under 212 (72-70-70). Kent George (Lenoir-Rhyne) and Haydn Brooks (Pfeiffer) tied for second, five strokes behind Heisey at 217.
The Knights host the Third Annual St. Andrews Fall Invitational at the Deercroft Golf & Country Club in Wagram, NC, on September 26-27.
