ANDERSON, SC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s golf team opened up the 2005/2006 golf season with a 299 in the first round of the Anderson Invitational hosted by Anderson College. The Knights are in fourth place heading into Tuesday’s final round while the women are currently in tenth.
Men
Sophomore John Kolls (Durham, NC) leads the St. Andrews men’s team with an opening 72 on the 6,402-yard, par-71 Brookstone Meadows Golf Club. Kolls sits in a four-way tie for seventh place behind tournament leaders Adam Sheriff (Anderson), Anthony Richey (Tri-County), Matt Short (Lees-McRae) and Steven Cooley (Anderson), who all shot two-under par 69’s.
Senior Nathan Young (Kewanee, IL) lurks just behind Kolls for the team lead with an opening 73.Young is tied for 11th. Junior Alvin Yeung (Markham, Ont., Canada) posted a five-over 76 while freshman Alfred Kristinsson (Reykjvik, Iceland) and junior Rebel Kennedy (Sundridge, Ont., Canada) carded 78’s.
St. Andrews team total of 299 puts them in solo fourth place, 13 strokes behind Tri-County Community College (286). The Knights will also try and pass Cape Fear Community College (287) and host Anderson (296). SAPC leads seven other teams in the 11 college event including CVAC rivals Mount Olive and Lees-McRae.
Women
Sophomore Heather Pothier (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada) will try and overcome a slim one-stroke deficit on Tuesday after shooting a 76 today on the 5,217-yar, par-71 Brookstone Meadows Golf Club. Pothier is tied with Carlie Eastman of Anderson and trails Paige Haverty of Catawba by one.
Junior Knight Andrea Johnston (Chapel Hill, NC) is tied for 22nd after firing an 86. Sophomore Tara Laird (Manilla, IN) and senior Kristen Bowling (Marietta, GA) finished the Knights scoring with a 93 and 126, respectively.
St. Andrews finished with a score of 381 with only four golfers participating in its first tournament. Catawba leads the women’s event with a 326 while host Anderson only trails by one after posting a 327.
