Golfer’s Finish 4th in Atlantic Regional
May
5, 2004
WILSON,
NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian
College men’s golf team concluded its season with a promising
fourth place finish at the NCAA D-II Atlantic Super-Regional
at the Wilson Country Club firing a 302-304-606 to finish 14
shots behind the winner and host, Barton College. The Knights,
who were playing in their first ever Regional, turned some heads
as they finished fourth out of eight teams on the 6,774-yard
par-72 track.
Monday’s
first round was cancelled because of rain, shortening the event to
a 36-hole sprint. The Knights sat in fifth place after Tuesday’s
round and never gave up making a nice run in Wednesday’s final
round jumping over Belmont Abbey and finishing only two strokes behind
19th ranked Coker for fourth place.
Barton,
who is ranked 14th nationally, shot 293-299-592 to finish six shots
clear of 21st ranked Pfeiffer University (299-299-598) and 12 shots
up on Coker.
Josh Talton
and Courtney Faircloth, who finished in a tie for first individually
with Lees-McRae’s Dion Sirriani, paced the Bulldogs. All three
shot even par over the two days and Talton emerged the medalist when
he holed out a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.
The Knights
finished with three individuals in the top 20 including Alvin Yeung
and Do Ha, who each shot a five-over 149 to finish in a two-way tie
for 10th. Yeung, the CVAC Freshman of the Year, shot SAPC’s
lowest round of the tournament an even-par 72 on Wednesday. Graham
Bell finished T-20th with a 10-over 154. Josh Boucher led St. Andrews
after the first day with a 74 but posted a disappointing 81 on the
second day to finish in a tie for 23rd. Sergej Dronov concluded the
scoring for the Knights with a pair of 80’s.
The Knights,
who were picked to finish sixth in the CVAC coaches’ pre-season
poll, defeated three other conference schools including two of which
were picked ahead of them. The Knights will try to build on its recent
success with a young team that consists of no seniors to become a
serious threat in any tournament they play in.

Knights
Golfers Qualify for Super Regionals
April
29, 2004
LAURINBURG,
NC—For the first time in
the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference history the St. Andrews
Presbyterian College men’s golf team has qualified for
the NCAA Division II Super-Regionals to be played at the Wilson
Country Club in Wilson, NC on May 3-5.
The Knights
will compete against seven other teams and five individuals for the
right to qualify for the NCAA D-II Men’s Golf National Championships
in DeLand, FL (near Orlando) during the NCAA D-II Sports Festival.
The winners of each regional (10) plus eight at-large teams will
fill the field in the national tourney. The low individual from each
region who is not on a winning team will also qualify.
SAPC has
had its best year since the inception of the CVAC (1995) and with
a very young team could surprise some people as they contend for
the regional title. Back in early March the Knights played at the
Wilson CC in the Lee Nissan/Barton College Intercollegiate and finished
sixth in a 13-team field (very bad weather that week).
You can
follow the tournament live on www.golfstat.com as all players’ scores
will be updated after every third whole on all three days.

worse conditions.
Freshman
Alvin Yeung had an outstanding tournament finishing in a tie for
22nd place with a 74-77-151 (+7) to lead St. Andrews. The Johnny
Palmer Invitational marked the first collegiate tournament for Yeung,
who was unable to compete in the first tournament of the year due

knowing that they would have to count all four players scores that
