SAPC held off Pfeiffer University and Catawba College by four points to secure win number one for first year head coach Micheal Coggins. The Knights scored 40 points while the Falcons and Indians both had 44 points. St. Andrews also defeated Bluefield State College.
James Walls once again led the Knights to the finish line, completing the 8k trek around Hagan Stone Park in a blazing time of 27 minutes and 36 seconds. Walls was the second fastest DII runner out of 24. The Bear Creek, N.C., product also finished ahead of 18 harriers from DI institutions. Walls runner-up finish was his best collegiate result.
Doug Holt (Haddonfield, N.J.) knocked more than two minutes off his first race time of the season to finish fourth. Holt clocked in at 28:44 to pace a trio of Knights that finished within 75 seconds of each other. Josh Pickett (Asheville, N.C.) followed close behind Holt in sixth place with a time of 28:57. Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) was the fourth SAPC endurance runner to earn a top-10 finish with a speed of 29:56. Pickett and Wilson’s times were also season-best performances at the 8k distance.
The win marked the fifth team title captured by the St. Andrews senior class.
Freshman Caleb Mitcler (Green Mountain, N.C.) completed the Knights scoring by finishing ahead of four Bluefield State scoring runners, which proved to be the winning margin. Mitcler posted a new PR time of 35:27.0.
St. Andrews will next compete in the Royals Cross Country Challenge hosted by Queens University of Charlotte on Friday, October 15. The inaugural competition will take place at McAlpine Creek Park, which is the host site of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Championships and Southeast Regional.
