WILMINGTON, N.C.—Junior Doug Holt (Haddonfield, N.J.) ran a personal best time in a 5k race to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s cross country team at the 2009 Adidas Seahawks Cross Country Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington on Friday evening.
The Knights open up the season with a respectable fifth place finish out of six teams in a difficult field that primarily consisted of NCAA Division I opposition. The Host Seahawks won the team title; East Carolina University claimed the runner-up spot; and Campbell University rounded out the top-three teams in third.
Holt was the second fasted D-II runner in the field, placing 16th overall out of 56 racers with a blazing speed of 16:01.08.
Junior James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) was the second fastest Knight and the 29th harrier to complete the endurance race, clocking in with a speed of 16:51.82.
St. Andrews showed their depth less than a minute later when four straight Knights crossed the finish line in an eight-second span. Senior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) and Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) led the charge finishing a half second apart with McKee taking 39th with a time of 17:32.16 and Wilson finishing 40th at 17:32.64. Junior Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) surged at the end for a time of 17:37.14 and freshman Will James (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) completed the cluster at 17:39.70 in his first collegiate race. Senior James Lloyd (Lusby, Md.) concluded the Knights running at 18:41.10.
St. Andrews next competes in the Guilford Cross Country Carnival on Saturday (Sept. 19).The men’s 8k race at the Meadows Cross Country Course is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m.
