WINGATE, NC—Sophomore Chris Miller (Cedar Park, TX) dominated the men’s 10K race at the Wingate University Invitational, winning the individual title by 24 seconds and guiding the Knights to a third place finish in the 16-team field. The SAPC women’s team finished 15th out of 17 colleges.
Sponsored by OrthoCarolina, the event also served as pre-regional races for the 2005 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional that will be hosted by Wingate on Nov. 5. All total, 236 runners finished today’s two races.

Men’s 10K
Miller jumped out to the early lead and never looked back winning the 112-runner event with a 34:05 time on the 10,000-meter course. Miller’s finish was made even more impressive under the extremely hot weather conditions that saw many runners drop out.
The Knights proved their No. 2 ranking in the Southeast Region was legitimate by coming in third in a race that featured eight of the top-10 teams in the region.
Mars Hill College utilized its depth to take the win in the men’s 10K race. The Lions placed five runners in the top 20, accumulating 55 points. The University of Alabama in Huntsville, a South Region powerhouse, was second with 79 points, while St. Andrews Presbyterian College was a close third with 96 markers.
SAPC defeated regional challengers Anderson, Coker, Wingate, Lees-McRae, Pfeiffer, NC Central, Tusculum, Barton, Catawba, and Queens. The Knights also finished ahead of Clayton State, UNC Pembroke, and Georgia College & State University.
Freshman Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, VA) posted a strong seventh place finish with a 35:05 mark in his first collegiate 10K race. Junior Tim Bourke (Alden, NY) was recognized on the All-Invitational Team (top-15 individuals) with a time of 36 minutes flat.
The freshman Austin, Texas, duo of Travis Cansler (37:23) and Perry Morris (38:20) finished 34th and 48th, respectively. Sophomore Adam Vick (Salisbury, NC) followed just behind Morris in 50th with a time of 38:45. Freshman Patrick Hogan (Denton, NC), 48:11, and Devon Gillis (Wilmington, NC), 48:27, completed the Knights running.
Women’s 6K
Senior Kelly Chaplin (Montpelier, VT) led the St. Andrews women’s cross country team to 15th place finish out of 17 teams with a fourth place finish in the 124-runner, 6K event. Chaplin was the Southeast Region and CVAC’s fastest runner with a time of 24:11.
Clayton State ’s Allison Kreutzer won the individual title for the second straight year completing the course in 22:57. The Alabama-Huntsville due of Caitlin Heider and Megan Fairclough took second and third.
No. 11 nationally ranked UAH Chargers won the team title with 37 points. Host Wingate finished second with 107 points and Mars Hill followed in third with 113. SAPC finished with 349 points.
Freshman Leah Nicholson (Hendersonville, NC) finished 61st for the Knights stopping the clock at 28:11. Freshman Valerie Hamilton (Concord, NC) posted a time of 32:44 and sophomore Sara Pauciello (Sayreville, NY) followed at 34:55. Freshmen Madeline Schramel (Ocracoke, NC) and India Hill (Somerset, VA) conquered their first collegiate race in 35:30 and 37:23, respectively. Sophomore Jordan Copp (Overland Park, KS) wrapped up the Knights running at 37:51.
The Knights hit the trail two weeks from now at the Hagan Stone Cross Country Classic in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday, October 1.
