THOMASVILLE, NC—Kelly Chaplin of St. Andrews Presbyterian College has been selected as the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) women’s cross country Runner of the Week. The Knights men’s XC team also made some noise moving up to No. 2 in the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional Poll.
Senior Kelly Chaplin started the 2005 cross country season with her second straight victory at the UNC Pembroke Invitational. Chaplin won the race by a commanding 47 seconds ahead of the next runner. The Montpelier, Vermont, native knocked 47 seconds off her time at the same race from last year. Chaplin’s 5K time was five seconds faster than any other time she had last year for that distance. Chaplin helped the Knights, who only raced five runners in their first competition, finish eighth out of ten teams.
The St. Andrews men’s cross country team opened up the 2005 season with a solid victory at the UNC Pembroke Invitational. The Knights defeated seven total teams, five of which participate in the Southeast region, including regionally ranked Wingate. The team’s success was built on depth that included six runners finishing in the top-17 of the 61-runner field.
St. Andrews moved from seventh in the Southeast Region to second after the win. The Knights current ranking of second is the highest mark St. Andrews has held since joining NCAA Division II. SAPC was ranked as high as third in the region last year.
The Knights cross country teams will complete in the Wingate Invitational on the Campus of Wingate University Saturday morning. The Wingate Invite will serve as the Pre-Regional for the Southeast Region. The women’s 6K race starts at 9:30 a.m. while the men take off on the 10K course at 10:15 a.m.
