SAPC men’s runners start ’05 season with victory
Chaplin wins women’s race

LUMBERTON, NC—For the second straight year the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s cross country team won the UNC Pembroke Invitational at Luther Britt Park and senior Knight Kelly Chaplin (Montpelier, VT) won the women’s individual title.

Men’s 8K

The St. Andrews men’s XC team, who enter the 2005 season ranked seventh in the Southeast Region of NCAA Division II, held off eight teams including No. 2 regionally ranked Wingate by placing all five of its scoring runners in the top quarter of the 61-runner field.

Chris Miller (Cedar Park, TX) and Tim Bourke (Alden, NY) led the Knights charge with a third and fourth place finish. Miller’s time of 26:02 was 28 seconds behind race winner Issreal Jaimes of St. Augustine’s and 23 seconds behind runner-up Brandon Dubianca of Wingate. Bourke finished with a 26:16 time.

Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, VA) followed in sixth with a 26:35 mark and Perry Morris (Austin, TX) finished 10th at 27:08. Adam Vick (Salisbury, NC) and Travis Cansler (Austin, TX) had top-20 finishes with times of 27:26 and 27:53. Completing the Knights running were Devon Gillis (Wilmington, NC) and Patrick Hogan (Denton, NC) with 32:56 and 32:57 times, respectively.

The Knights won with 36 points while Wingate came in second and host UNC Pembroke followed in third. SAPC also defeated CVAC rivals Pfeiffer and Mount Olive.

Women’s 5K

Chaplin dominated the individual honors in the women’s race winning the 66-runner event by 47 seconds with a 19:10 time. The Knights, who only entered five runners this week, finished 8th out of 10 teams.

Leah Nicholson (Hendersonville, NC) had an impressive 22nd place showing in her first collegiate race stopping the clock at 22:12. Valerie Hamilton (Concord, NC) followed in 42nd with a time of 24:49. Sara Pauciello (Sayreville, NJ) and Jordan Copp (Overland Park, KS) completed the scoring for the Knights with 27:51 and 30:29 times, respectively.

Regionally ranked Wingate won the women’s race finishing ahead of host UNC Pembroke. The Knights finished ahead of CVAC foe Mount Olive.

St. Andrews hits the course next Saturday at the 2005 Southeast Pre-Regional on the campus of Wingate University. The women’s 6K starts at 9:30 a.m. while the men’s 10K begins at 10:15 a.m.
