Billy Lee
Head Coach

Billy Lee joined the St. Andrews athletic staff as the head coach of the men’s basketball program in August of 2005.

Lee posted a 12-16 overall record in his first season with the St. Andrews men’s basketball team. Lee’s nine wins in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play was the most since the 1999/2000 season at SAPC. The Knights also had their first win against a nationally ranked opponent (No. 18 Mount Olive on January 30) in recent history under Lee’s directions. Coach Lee also coached one All-CVAC selection in his first season. The 2006/07 season will feature Lee’s first recruiting class.

Prior to St. Andrews, Lee coached at NCAA Division I Campbell University for 18 years (1985-2003). During his tenure at Campbell, Lee led the Fighting Camels to its most successful season since joining Division I. Lee was also the Director of the Campbell University Basketball School that is considered to be nation’s oldest and largest of its kind. Lee was a five-time Coach of the Year in three different conferences.

In 1992, Lee guided Campbell to a Big South Conference Championship and a berth into the NCAA Division I East Regionals. The Camels faced eventual national champions Duke and Lee gained national attention at the tournament for his wit and humor.

Lee has spent the past two years as a motivational speaker, TV basketball analyst, and college basketball consultant.

Prior to Campbell, Lee coached at UNC Pembroke for seven years (1978-1985). The Braves won three conference championships, advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, and had back-to-back 20-win seasons under Lee.

Lee has over 400 career wins and has had a high graduation rate and plans to continue that trend at St. Andrews.

After graduating from Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education, Lee spent six years coaching at the high school level including Wake Forest-Rolesville, East Montgomery, and New Bern.

Lee joined the college ranks as an assistant coach at East Carolina University in 1976. He spent two seasons at ECU where he obtained a Master of Arts in Education Degree.

Billy served on the USA Basketball Committee, member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, and on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Amateur Sports Association.

In addition to his coaching, Lee has spent the past 15 years as a public speaker for numerous banquets, fundraisers, seminars, and coaching clinics. Lee has been heard by Fortune 100 companies, high schools, and other business and civic groups. Lee’s been featured by ESPN, CBS, NBC, and ABC and quoted in Sports Illustrated and major newspapers from coast to coast.

Lee has published two successful books on basketball strategy titled “The Flex Offense” and Attacking the Zone” that are both on display in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Billy served on the USA Basketball Committee, member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, and on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Amateur Sports Association.

Lee is married to Mount Olive women’s basketball head coach Wendy Lawrence and they currently reside in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

 

Richie Schueler
Assistant Coach

Richie Schueler joined the St. Andrews Presbyterian College athletics staff in June of 2004 as an assistant men’s basketball coach.

Last year, Schueler helped the Knights to their best Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference season since 1999/2000 with nine league victories. Last season also featured a win against a nationally ranked opponent (No. 18 Mount Olive on January 30).

In just two years at SAPC, Schueler has helped the Knights win a total of 24 games with the 12 wins in each season being the most since the 1999/2000 campaign. Schueler has also coached two All-CVAC selections and three CVAC Players of the Week.

In his first season Schueler helped the program to its best start in the college's NCAA Division II era with a 4-0 start.

Schueler also enters his third season as the head coach of the St. Andrews men’s basketball junior varsity team.

Schueler comes to North Carolina after spending the '03/04 as an assistant coach for the Wilmington College (Ohio) men’s basketball team. While working on his Master’s at Austin Peay State University, Schueler helped out as a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball team. During that year APSU won their conference tournament and qualified for the national tournament.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native’s playing experience included one year at his Alma Mater, the University of Evansville. He was also selected to play for the Svjetlost Brod A1 Pro Basketball League in Croatia. Schueler has worked with Athletes in Action and has been involved in many basketball camps.

Schueler graduated from Evansville in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education. Schueler finished up his graduate studies at Austin Peay in 2003 with a Master of Science in Health & Human Performance with a Sports Administration Specialization. Schueler also works as a Resident Director at SAPC.

 
Darrick Barga
Assistant Coach

Darrick Barga joins the St. Andrews Presbyterian College athletics staff as an assistant coach to the men’s basketball program beginning in August of 2006.

Barga will help the Knights basketball program in a multitude of capacities including conditioning coach, scouting, recruiting, on-court coaching, game-plans, development, and video coordination. Barga will also assist Coach Schueler with the St. Andrews men’s basketball junior varsity team.

Barga comes to St. Andrews after spending last season as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team at Wilmington College of Ohio. In his only season with the team, Barga helped a Quakers team that ranked fifth in rebounding in NCAA Division III to a 19 win season. Barga coached four academic All-Conference honorees, three All-Conference selections, one All-Region honoree choice, and one All-American.

Barga played two seasons at Wilmington College of Ohio. While serving as a Co-Captain in his senior season, Barga helped the Quakers set a school record for conference wins.

Barga graduated from his alma mater with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Math and a minor in management in December of 2005. Barga currently resides in Laurinburg.
