Limestone edge Knights basketball, 62-51

GAFFNEY, SC—Limestone College took advantage of 21 extra free throws to hold off St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 62-51, in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s basketball action on Monday at the Timken Center.

The Saints, who converted on 26-of-33 (78.8%) free throw attempts including 19-of-24 (79.2%) in the second half, improved its record to 14-13 overall and 12-8 in the CVAC. The Knights, who went 4-of-12 (33.3%) from the charity stripe, fell to 12-13 and 9-10.

St. Andrews took advantage of a Limestone squad that shot 27.3-percent in the first half to take a slim 21-20 advantage at halftime.

Back-to-back field goals by sophomores Joseph Gripper (Charlotte, NC) and Dwayne Jeffcoat (Fayetteville, NC) extended the Knights lead to five out of the locker room.

The Saints quickly tied the game up at 32-32 with 14:18 remaining and followed with a 17-6 run over the next five minutes to take a commanding 49-38 lead. A Marquis Bell three-pointer capped the run. While SAPC continued to battle, Limestone maintained at least an eight-point lead for the rest of the game by hitting free throws.

Both squads grabbed 37 boards but St. Andrews committed more fouls (26-20) and more turnovers (19-15).

Senior Chad Eichelberger (Austell, GA) led the Knights with his fifth double-double of the season. Eichelberger tied for a game-high 17 points while snaring 10 boards. Junior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, VA) and sophomore Taiwon Grooms (Landover, MD) bucketed 10 and 9, respectively.

Shawn Poppie tied Eichelberger with 17 points while Saints teammate Marquintus Jones followed with 16.

St. Andrews travels to Lawrenceville, Virginia, for a non-conference meeting with St. Paul’s on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
